RELIGIOUS ANTHROPOLOGY JAN 12, 2014 – THE LAW SILENTLY READ EXODUS 22 NOTE WHICH TWO LAWS MAKE THE MOST SENSE TO YOU, AND WHICH TWO LAWS MAKE THE LEAST SENSE TO YOU.

PARTNER DISCUSSION  Share in partners which laws make the most sense to you and which make the least sense to you. Work together to try and figure out why such a law would be important to God.  Decide as a pair which of these is your “favorite” law.

PLAYING WITH FIRE: PAGE 119  Do you think this is an appropriate way to apply the Law? Is it applicable at all? Why or why not?

P THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW 1. Given to ex-slaves who had been under dominance of empire. 2. The law is the covenant. It is a relational agreement. 3. Provided principles to guide. 4. The Law is instructional rather than judicial.

HOMEWORK  Socrative Quiz: Read “The Purpose of the Law” (Class #682594)  Study Exodus 22:16-31 for Scripture Quiz on Wednesday

RELIGIOUS ANTHROPOLOGY JAN 14, 2014 – THE LAW

P 121 – FIVE CATEGORIES OF LAW 1. Criminal Law 2. Civil Law 3. Family Law 4. Cultic or Religious Law 5. Charitable Law

P 122 – TWO KINDS OF LAW 1. Apodictic Law 1. Absolute Law 2. Example: 10 commandments 2. Casuistic Law 1. Case Law 2. If “A, then B”

IN PARTNERS: READ EXODUS 22  Classify each law according to its category and kind.  Each group turn in a paper.

CHRISTIAN’S RELATIONSHIP TO THE LAW: P124

EXEGETICAL PAPER: MAJOR COMPONENTS  1. Outline of text  2. Exegesis: What does the text say, how does the textual context affect it, what is the cultural/historical context of the passage?  3. Interpretation: What does the text mean? What did it mean to the original audience? Why is the text where it is and what is it trying to communicate?  4. Application (includes the necessary Contemporization): How does this apply to the modern world, and how should it affect the life and actions of a Christian?

EXEGETICAL PAPER: DUE DATES  1. Selection of Passage January 22, 2014  2. Outline due: January 31, 2014  3. Rough Draft due: February 7, 2014  4. Final Draft due: February 21, 2014

CHOOSING A TEXT  A text must be AT LEAST 10 verses long and must represent a cohesive unit of thought  That means, you can’t just pick any 10 verses out of the Bible that you feel like… your start and end point have to make sense.  It can be from any genre of your choice but must be approved by me.  I recommend not waiting until the last minute, because I may reject your passage (No Romans)  No Repeats, first come first serve

RELIGIOUS ANTHROPOLOGY JAN 15, 2014 – THE LAW READ EXODUS 22:16-31 TO STUDY

SCRIPTURE QUIZ 1: EXODUS 22: When does a pledged cloak need to be returned to a debtor? 2. Interest cannot be charged for loans to what people? 3. List 3 crimes from this passage that are punishable by death. 4. Why should aliens/sojourners/foreigners not be mistreated or wronged? 5. What will God do to the person who mistreats the widow or orphan/fatherless? 6. Who should not be cursed? 7. Other than not being eaten, what should be done with the meat of an animal torn by wild beasts? 8. How long can firstborn cattle and sheep stay with their mothers?

PP – SPIRITUAL FORMATION BY MOSAIC LAW?  If the New Covenant supersedes the Law… why is it still in the Christian Bible?  Revelatory vs. Regulatory – What’s this mean?  Regulatory – tells us how to live  Revelatory – reveals things about God to us

PP – PRIMARY AND SECONDARY QUESTIONS FOR LAW  Primary: What does this passage tell us about God and His holiness, about Israel and her sin, and about how Israel needed to obey in order to maintain her covenant relationship with God? What specific areas of life does God expect holiness and transformation within his people?  Secondary: Are these areas still relevant under the new covenant as areas I should be concerned about and areas in which I should be seeking to obey God?

STUDY GUIDE: 1. Be able to identify the category and kind of law set before you 2. Answer the two primary questions about any passage from the Mosaic law. 3. Read pages and be prepared to answer the question: “Did God expect Israel to keep the law?”
