E2 Library Media Center Library Program Overview

Goals and Objectives To enable students to become effective independent users of ideas, information, and technology To cultivate a strong desire among all students to read for enjoyment and to fulfill their own curiosity To participate in instructional activities in large or small groups and individually To learn to use information and technology To pursue their curiosity, interests, and passions

Background Research A well-stocked library has a positive impact on student achievement, regardless of the socio-economic or educational levels of the community (School Library Impact Studies) Findings show that technology and information skills are best taught within the curricular context rather than in isolation (School Libraries Work) Technology as a Second Language (TSL), introduced in 1995, emphasized information literacy and the use of technology within the school community. Originally overseen by tech staff, this will now be implemented by the LMS as a component of the integrated, collaborative approach to student learning centered in the LMC

Key Characteristics of E2 Library Program Direct curricular links, so core content is taught in the library Integrated with information and technology Team-taught/facilitated by teacher and LMS Many activities/lessons with student choice component to encourage students to pursue answers to their own questions Information or technology skills linked to information literacy standards Alexandria library management software
