Overview IC2 Goals IC2 Functions IC2 Structure and Membership IC2 Projects Questions

The Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse (IC2) is an association of state, local, and tribal governments that promotes a clean environment, healthy communities, and a vital economy through the development and use of safer chemicals and products. The IC2 currently comprises approximately 30 organizations. Half are state and local agencies, and half are businesses, NGOs, and academic institutions. It is a membership organization, and we always welcome new members, so please talk with me if you have questions or would be interested in joining. You can find the list of members on the IC2 website: theic2.org.

IC2 Goals Avoid duplication and enhance efficiency and effectiveness of agency initiatives on chemicals through collaboration and coordination Build governmental capacity to identify and promote safer chemicals and products Ensure that agencies, businesses, and the public have ready access to high-quality and authoritative chemicals data, information, and assessment methods

IC2 Functions Support health and environmental agencies with development and implementation of programs to promote use of safer chemicals and products Support the development of alternatives assessment methods and identification of safer alternatives Share data and information on use, hazard, exposure, and alternatives

IC2 Functions (continued) Share strategies and outcomes on chemicals prioritization initiatives Build the capacity of agencies by sharing materials, strategies, and trainings Assist agencies in meeting the relevant information needs of businesses, consumers, and the public

Examples of Chemical Use Reporting Washington Children’s Safe Product Act Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction Clearinghouse (IMERC) California Safe Cosmetics Program California Pesticide Use Reporting New York State Pesticide Use Reporting Norwegian Product Register Swedish Product Register Walmart (with WERCS) and other retailers

Washington Children’s Safe Product Act The Children’s Safe Product Reporting Rule requires manufacturers of children's products sold in Washington to report if their product contains a Chemical of High Concern to Children. Ecology also tests products to ensure that manufacturers are reporting accurate information about their children’s products and are complying with laws regulating other chemicals.

Benefits of Interstate Collaboration Greater efficiency and cost effectiveness for agencies Increased opportunities for multi-state involvement in data analysis and presentation Improved access to robust data Decreased reporting burden and better services for reporters Coordinated distribution of information and data to the public
