Disease

Definition Disease- abnormal condition affecting the body

Types of Diseases Heart Disease Skin Disease Liver Disease Lung Disease AIDS Cancer Tuberculosis Malaria

Heart Disease AKA Cardiac Disease A disease that affects the heart It is the leading cause of death in the U.S, being responsible for 25.4% of deaths Usually caused by the thickening of the artery walls The arteries narrow and limit the amount of blood necessary to supply oxygen to the heart

Facts  12 million people suffer from heart disease  Heart attacks happen to 7 million people  Children who have parents with heart disease are at a greater risk of developing it  Almost every minute someone will die from this  Every 33 seconds someone will have some type of heart problem

Causes of Heart Disease High Blood Pressure(Hypertension) Diabetes Obesity/Overweight High Blood Cholesterol Heredity Smoking Physical Inactivity

Treatment/Prevention  Surgery  Medication  Lifestyle Changes

Lung Disease AKA Respiratory Disease A disease in the lungs that causes them not to work properly Types of Lung Diseases include Asthma Obstructive Lung Disease Inflammatory Lung Disease Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Facts  Almost 170,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with lung cancer every year  Smoking is responsible for 82% of lung disease  Non-smokers can develop lung disease  More people die from lung cancer than prostate, colon and breast cancer combined

Causes of Lung Disease Smoking Air Pollution Radon Asbestos

Signs/Symptoms  Pain while breathing  Shortness of breath  Continuous coughing  Coughing up blood or mucus

Treatment Surgery Radiation therapy Chemotherapy

Prevention Don’t smoke Avoid second hand smoke Eat healthy Protect yourself from chemical fumes Avoid asbestos

Aids  Disease of the immune system caused by HIV  Facts about Aids One of the most difficult health issues in the world 33.4 million people live with Aids around the world 2 million people die every year from Aids It has claimed around 30 million lives More than 2 million children are living with Aids

Transmission of Aids Unprotected sex Sharing needles or syringes Blood transfusion Breast-feeding Pregnancy/Childbirth

Signs/Symptoms  Rapid weight loss  Heavy night sweats  Diarrhea that lasts longer than a week  A dry cough  A fever that comes and goes  White spots on the mouth, tongue or throat

Treatment No cure to completely get rid of it Having AIDS does not automatically mean death, it can be managed Antiretroviral therapy Medications taken for people with Aids Helps improve your health for many years

Cancer Cancer occurs when cells divide uncontrollably Facts about cancer There are more than 100 different types Any part of the body can be affected 70% of cancer related deaths occur in low and middle income countries Cancer can be cured if detected early It is estimated that over 500,000 people in the U.S. will die of cancer in 2011

Types of Cancer  Breast  Lung  Kidney  Liver  Colon  Prostate  Stomach  Testicular

Causes of Cancer Inherited cancer Cancer itself cannot be inherited, however an abnormal gene that leads to cancer can be Smoking Too much sun exposure

Treatment/Prevention  Exercise  Healthy diet  Surgery  Chemotherapy  Radiation therapy
