For Packaging & Shipping of Regulated Medical Waste and Pharmaceutical Waste U.S DOT Hazmat Training

DOT Hazmat Training Requirements Training must be completed within 90 days of employment Employee can perform Hazmat functions (until trained) if directly supervised Retraining is required every three years This training may only be used to meet highway transportation requirements, and is NOT to be used to meet the requirements for air shipment of hazardous materials

Who Needs to be Trained?

DOT Required Training Topics General Awareness & Familiarization Function Specific Safety Security

General Awareness & Familiarization: DOT Hazardous Materials A Hazardous Material is defined as a substance or material that is capable of posing an unreasonable risk to: Safety Health Property When transported in commerce Hazardous Materials are part of most of our daily lives and of most healthcare workplaces Regulated Medical Waste is such a Hazardous Material

Regulated Medical Waste falls into category 6.2 There are NINE hazard classifications used by the Department of Transportation.

Function Specific

Improperly prepared containers should never be accepted for transportation under any circumstance. Examples of unacceptable packaging are: Leaking containers, protruding objects, improperly closed containers, overfilling and mislabeled containers. Packaging Regulated Medical Waste (RMW)

Function Specific A RMW transport container must contain the following: -biohazard symbol -the word “Biohazard” -ID number -description -orientation arrows *The proper shipping name for RMW is: Regulated Medical Waste, n.o.s.

Function Specific

During transport, the shipping papers must be within reach of the driver or mounted to the driver’s side door at all times.

Safety

-ALWAYS use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling hazardous waste materials! -ALWAYS perform hand hygiene after handling hazardous waste!

Safety

All EPA RCRA Hazardous Wastes are also DOT Hazardous Materials while they are in transport, but not vice versa! Ex. RMW (a DOT Hazardous Material) is not defined by EPA as being RCRA Hazardous Waste.

Security Measures Keep RMW storage areas restricted from the general public and unauthorized, untrained personnel Train personnel handling RMW Follow Medical Waste policies and procedures Know your driver: Don’t be afraid to ask for ID, watch for unmarked vehicles Make sure all containers are properly packaged, marked and safe for transport before the driver loads them on to the truck For the purposes of this training, please note that a written security plan is not required of workplaces shipping hazardous materials.
