Two Rules: 1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers. EXAMPLE: = 19 = -8 2. To ADD numbers with different signs, SUBTRACT the absolutes values and the answer has the same sign as the number with the largest absolute value. EXAMPLE: = = 4 = = -3 = 10 – 4 = -6
The OPPOSITE of a number is also called its ADDITIVE INVERSE. So Subtracting is ADDING THE INVERSE! In Algebra: a - b = a + (-b) OR a minus b equals a plus the opposite of b. EXAMPLES: = 6 + (-11) = -5
