 Two Rules: 1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers.  EXAMPLE: = 19  = -8  2. To ADD numbers with different signs, SUBTRACT the absolutes values and the answer has the same sign as the number with the largest absolute value.  EXAMPLE: = = 4  = = -3  = 10 – 4 = -6

 The OPPOSITE of a number is also called its ADDITIVE INVERSE.  So Subtracting is ADDING THE INVERSE!  In Algebra: a - b = a + (-b)  OR  a minus b equals a plus the opposite of b. EXAMPLES: = 6 + (-11) = -5
