How should Brazil care for it’s rainforest Essay writing

What should be included in your assignment? Introduction - A. Where is Brazil? What is the rainforest and why is it important? Resources – Notes from lessons Atlas Internet research Q1. Ways that the rainforest is being used A. Explain what the word exploit means Describe and explain why the trees are being cleared Explain why the trees and the land that has been cleared is being used for Resources – Notes from Video / Worksheet Geog 2 page 52 Q2. Why and how are they doing this – Explain the reasons behind Brazil clearing the rainforest Explain the inequalities in Brazil, explaining and describing what life in like in the favela compared to other parts of Brazil Resources – Noes from video about the Favela Geog 2 page 113 and 118 How are Brazil going to make money from the rainforest to resolve the inequality Worksheet – Why does Brazil need to do this Q3. We should be concerned about the future and deforestation because Describe and explain the local and global concerns of cutting down all the trees Resources – Questions answered from the video Why should we be concerned worksheet Q4. IN the future people of Brazil must decide what to do, I think Explain in this question what sustainable development is and how successful it could be Are there other ways to make money from the rainforest without destroying it What are your ideas and conclusions Resources – Questions answered from the video

Question 1 What to include – Develop your answers Why? What? Where? How? Who by? Identify, Describe, Explain, use examples, evaluate What is the rainforest being used for? Logging Mining Roads Ranching Hydroelectric Dams Farming What does the word Exploitation mean?

Mind Map of how the Brazilian rainforest is being used and its effects….. Using the Rain Forest Mining FarmingCattle Ranching Logging Why? Local Effect Global Effect Local Effect Global Effect

Question 2 - Why does Brazil need to do these things? Farms New, better life for people where they own land and make more money so can pay for their children’s education. Growing crops for food and to sell. Mining Valuable minerals to sell. Resources for industry. Creates jobs. Oil and Gas for energy and to sell Roads To get to trees and resources. Access to mines, farms and ranches. Can move goods to markets to sell. HEP Cheap energy for businesses and homes. Can sell any spare electricity to other countries Ranching Beef for food or to sell. Creates jobs. Logging Timber (wood) to make furniture, plywood and paper to sell. Resources for industry. Creates jobs. Clears land. Why is Brazil doing these things? Money for schools, hospitals, roads, power stations, railways, sewage systems, clean water. To raise money to help pay to develop Brazil from LIC to HIC.

Why do Brazil need to develop the rainforest? Brazil is need for money? Why? What sort of country is Brazil? How do we know this? Inequality examples? Favela – life living in a slum page 113 What is life like for Pedro? Page 118 How developed is Brazil? – Booklet Chart showing development – how rich or poor is Brazil? What is a development indicators? Life expectancy / Literacy rate / GDP per capita

Question 3 - Why should we be concerned? Local effects: Indios people Dams flood land Homeless Hunting ground lost. Conflict with settlers Diseases brought to the area Habitats lost Plants and animals Cleared land soon becomes infertile, so more land must be cleared for farms and ranches  Global effects:  Plants and animals lose habitat  Extinct  Medicinal plants  Medical drugs of the future  Trees and plants capture Carbon dioxide  Greenhouse effect  Global warming

Why worry about the Amazonian rain forest? Global effects: Medicines Page 119 geog 2 Global Warming Page 78 geog 2 Effects on animal and plant habitats Local effects: Indios people Page 29 in Places

Global effects: New Medicines Page 119 Geog 2 Global effect? How could this effect us? Some of the compounds in rainforest plants are also used to treat : Malaria, heart disease, bronchitis, hypertension, rheumatism, diabetes, muscle tension, arthritis, glaucoma, dysentery and tuberculosis, among other health problems. Also many an anaesthetics, enzymes, hormones, laxatives, cough mixtures, antibiotics and antiseptics are derived from rainforest plants and herbs.

Global effect: Climate change Page 78 geog 2 Think about science… How do plants get their energy? Which gas do they take from the atmosphere to help them do this?

What has happened to global temperatures as CO2 levels have increased?

The rain forest tree and plants absorb CO2. But now the climate of the whole planet to changing. We are burning more and more fossils fuels. This releases more and more carbon dioxide.

The levels you are aiming for… Level 4: DESCRIBE HOW and WHY the rain forest is being exploited. What is the impact of deforestation. (geog 2 page 118, video) Level 5: DESCRIBE and EXPLAIN HOW and WHY AMAZONIA is being exploited with examples HOW this AFFECTS PEOPLE AND THE ENVIRONMENT.(geog 2 page 118, video) Level 6: As level 4 & 5 plus DESCRIBE HOW destruction of the rainforest causes local and global problems and SUGGEST ways in which Brazil can BALANCE it’s search for wealth whilst protecting the environment. EXPLAIN how sustainable development could help. (geog 2 page , video clips) Level 7: As level 6 plus WHO IS RESPONSIBLE for dealing with this problem in the future? (geog 2 page 118)
