Bill Clinton on A+: While discussing education and the economy, and seated next to Bill Gates, Former President Bill Clinton speaks about A+ Schools. NEA Arts Magazine: It Takes a Community “But beyond test scores, A+ Schools are teaching one of the most important skills needed to succeed in the 21st century: creativity. As teachers find new avenues to engage and motivate their classrooms, students are learning the out-of-the-box thinking that is so valued in today's creative economy. With the A+ arts model as their academic companion, the future for A+ Gates County students is whatever their imagination holds”. Duke Faith & Leadership: The Art of Collaboration and Shared Leadership at A+ Schools “A+ Schools incorporate the arts into everyday learning. The result is a student body that is more engaged and faculty and staff that are working together as never before”. The Daily Advance from Elizabeth City: Teachers Prep for an A+ School Year “I was blind but now I see”. A+ IN THE NEWS

The Common Core academic standards are especially suited to arts integration because they are designed to promote critical thinking. The common core web site (corestandards.org) states, “By emphasizing required achievements, the Standards leave room for teachers, curriculum developers, and states to determine how those goals should be reached and what additional topics should be addressed.” Arts integration steps in to be the answer to “how” and the arts become the additional topics addressed. In addressing the arts in a math or English lesson, the arts become the learning agent, the modem between the academic knowledge and the experience of learning for students.corestandards.org

The Star-Spangled Music Foundation (a 501c3 non-profit educational organization) announces a nationwide “Star- Spangled Stories” contest for all students in grades K-12 in the United States and its territories. Selected stories will be featured on and on a nationally broadcast radio special. How Can My Students Participate? Students should tell their story in an age-appropriate way: an essay, a picture, a song… We encourage creative approaches! Students might consider expressing their own experiences singing the anthem or hearing it at a significant event. They may choose to share personal perspectives from friends or family members. There are no limitations on style or approach. Essays should not exceed 1000 words, songs 4 minutes, or images 5 MB. In July of 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives passed House Resolution #275 designating the second week of September as National Arts in Education Week. The resolution expressed congressional support for arts education: House Resolution #275 Whereas arts education, comprising a rich array of disciplines including dance, music, theatre, media arts, literature, design, and visual arts, is a core academic subject and an essential element of a complete and balanced education for all students. The A+ Schools Program CELEBRATES its 1700 A+ educators and administrators who work collaboratively and creatively to bring arts education, arts integration and arts exposure to their nearly 20,000 students across the state! Keep up the great work for our children!!
