Smartphone Penetration Last Year (2013) 1.40 billion smartphone users Roughly 1/3 of mobile users Roughly 1/5 of world’s population Projected to reach 1.76 billion smartphone users by the end of 2014 (up 25% from 2014). By 2015, it is projected that 15 countries will have greater than 50% smartphone penetration. China has the largest smartphone user base by far in 2014 with 520 million users (Second = USA with 164 million). By 2017 eMarketer projects that over a third of the world’s population and about half of mobile users will have a smartphone (2.73 billion smartphone users).
