Food Bank of Central New York Partnering with Venison Donation Coalition

Mission Statement Food Bank of Central New York is a not-for- profit organization working to eliminate hunger through nutritious food distribution, education and advocacy in cooperation with the community.

Feeding America Feeding America is a network of 210 Food Banks (think food supply chain distributors) across the nation. Feeding America is our umbrella organization under which we operate within strict guidelines and distribution protocol Food Bank of Central New York supplies our 11 counties through pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and additional programs.

Food Bank inventory in-streams Donations: Food, Funds, and gifts-in-kind V.A.P.: funds that may be accessed to help w/costs of donated harvest Wholesale purchase: donations would never meet the entire need, however are critical in maintaining the level of service we provide within budgetary constraints USDA: commodities distribution per availability

Supply Challenges Availability: seasons, broker/distributor, nutritional content, grant/fund status Market form: bulk, totes, cases, bags, pack size Transportation: timing, availability, cost Value: dollar value, dietary value

Importance of Protein Meat, Fish, Poultry, Eggs, Beans, Dairy Essential component of a healthy diet Challenges are much the same for recipients and for Food Bank of Central New York – Cost, perishability, access

Venison Donation Coalition Provides nutritious ground venison to New York State’s Food Banks since 1999 Averaging 38 tons per year connecting to families in need Hunters can choose to leave their properly field dressed deer at a participating processor for donation The appropriate food bank will pick up the ground, frozen venison and pay the processing fee DEER (3337),

Healthy and Versatile Venison is a lean, excellent source of animal protein Most ethnicities, skill levels, and kitchen settings can cope with using ground meats Since this is distributed frozen, we do not have to address the perishability factor.
