Korean War ! By: Chelsea D Johnson

What were the causes of this war ? After the war between China and Japan, certain parts of Korea were occupied by Japan. The United States wanted to solve the issue by dividing Korea. United State’s Commission decided to hold elections in Korea. The communists in North Korea refused to allow the election. The communists in South Korea boycotted it.

What were the causes of this war ? North Korean Army invaded South Korea on June 25, The United States wanted to stop the spread of communism. The Soviet Union wanted to spread communism to as many countries as possible.

Who were the major political and military leaders involved in the war ? The commander of the United Nations forces was Douglas MacArthur. Mao Tse-tung established a communist dictatorship in China. China sought to aid the communist in North Korea. President Truman was the United States Commander and Chief.

How did the Americans perceive the war on their personal lives ? Korean War was able to boost the economy of both Japan and the US. The Korean War also approved further expansion of military power. The Korean War also showed the growing anti- communist feeling across the US.

How did the Americans perceive the war on their personal lives ? Over 53,000 Americans were killed in the war. Pulled young people off the farms and made them an addition to the military. The demand for food crop increased because they needed to produce more food for the fighting soldiers.

What factors led to public support or opposition to the war ? Who were the leaders of this support/opposition ? Douglas MacArthur and President Truman supported this war because they were defending a nation that was being controlled when they believed in a democracy. Mao Tse-tung supported this war because he wanted to spread communism with him as the dictator which left him with more power.

What events brought an end to American involvement in the war ? Dwight D. Eisenhower had pledged to go to Korea to end the war. Negotiations broke down four different times. After much difficulty and nuclear threats by Eisenhower, an armistice agreement was signed July 27, 1953.

What were the primary changes brought about by this conflict ? Both North and South Korea have been divided into two separate nations. North Korea remained a communist nation. South Korea changed to a republic nation which is currently an ally to the United States.

How did America become the most dominate nation in the 20 th century ? This cartoon by the British cartoonist David Low, from the Daily Herald (30 Jun 1950), shows Truman and the United Nations rushing to Korea’s aid. Because of the Korean war it has helped America by making it the largest nation in military forces. This made America notice how unfair communism was and made the country fight for what's right. It also helped America become rich in its economy.
