The Korean War Causes and Impacts of “the Forgotten War”

North and South Korea

Contextual Background October 1949: Communists established the Peoples Republic of China under Mao Zedong. Shocked Americans Nationalist fled to Taiwan 1950: USSR and China sign a treaty of friendship and alliance. US needed a new ally in Asia  Rushed to rapidly recover Japan’s industrial economy

Cold War turns Hot 1945-Allies divided Korea into two zones Northern Zone – Soviets Southern Zone – US troops Led to civil war North Korea led by communist leader Kim Il Sung South Korea led by Syngman Rhee Kim Il Sung Syngman Rhee

U.S. Involvement South Korea economically unstable U.S. feared SK would fall to communism U.S. helped build up SK military 1949 US and Soviet remove their troops.

Fighting Begins June 25, 1950 NK invades SK Captures Seoul The UN asks for immediate cease fire

Support for South Korea U.N. labeled NK as aggressor Supported SK Sponsored by US U.S. enters SK General MacArthur Largest supporter of SK

Chinese Involvement  Chairman Mao Zedong watched US forces closely  500,000 troops waited on boarder for arrival of US forces  NK pushed back across the 38 th parallel  MacArthur given permission to enter into NK, but not China  Late 1950, China gave aid to NK

Conflict Over Plan  MacArthur wanted to expand war.  Blockade China’s coast  Invading China  Supporters: would overthrow Communists in China  Opponents: could entice the Soviets to become involved  WWIII & nuclear war  What do you think? Would it be worth WWIII to end communism in China?

Truman’s Response President Truman opposed MacArthur’s plan Truman removed MacArthur from his position in April 1951

Election of 1952 The war became an issue in 1952 election Republican candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower Democrat candidate Adlai Stevenson Eisenhower promised to end Korean War yet still resist spread of Communism Who won?

The War “Ends”  Eisenhower lived up to his promise  Bombing raids in NK increased by the U.S. May,1953  July 27 th, 1953 an armistice  Agreement to stop fighting, not an official peace treaty  Korea nearly the same after the war as before  Before war After war 
