Information on internet safety

What is Cyber Bullying? According to Law and Legal definition, “Cyber Bullying refers to any harassment that occurs via the internet, cell phone or other devices.” Cyber Bullying comes in many variations. Posting Rumors Spreading gossip Defaming people Humiliating people These types of Cyber Bullying usually result in other people changing their opinions about individuals based on the rumors spread.

Facts on Cyber Bullying Cyber Bullying has become a growing issue since people have had the capability to get on the internet from home and has continued to rapidly grow since internet has been made available on mobile devices. Over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. More than 1 in 3 young people have experienced cyber threats online. Over 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet

Cyber Bullying Facts (continued) About half of young people have experienced some form of cyber bullying, and 10 to 20 percent experience it regularly Mean, hurtful comments and spreading rumors are the most common type of cyber bullying Girls are at least as likely as boys to be cyber bullies or their victims Boys are more likely to be threatened by cyber bullies than girls Cyber bullying affects all races Cyber bullying victims are more likely to have low self esteem and to consider suicide

What are some effects of Cyber Bullying? When it comes to Cyber Bullying, there are four major effects that this vindictive act usually has on people: Psychological effects The victim will have negative responses The victim will have positive responses The victim will have harmful or even fatal responses Victims of Cyber Bullying are usually hesitant to tell an adult or authority figure.

The Psychological Effects Many of the victims that come from cyber bullying experience psychological effects. These include: Mental breakdowns The amount of bullying will effect the victim mentally and will have them paranoid, insecure, and feeling like less of a person. Social withdraw Individuals will tend to seclude themselves and start becoming anti-social because of the situation.

Positive Responses Blocking perpetrator from social media or from sending messages to the cell phone. Reporting instances to adults or local authority. Avoiding and not letting the situation occur longer that it has to.

Negative Responses Acting out in school The normal good tendencies of teens will begin to depreciate. Students will tend to turn homework in late, or not at all. Students will start fights or become disengaged in material Retaliation/Revenge on the perpetrator The victim will begin to cyber bully back to the perpetrator.

Harmful/Fatal Responses Cutting In surveys people have said that cutting makes the victim feel like cutting gives them an actual pain that they can see and are reminded of. Taking pills, getting involved in drugs Victims have reported that pills and illegal drugs help “numb” the pain of the bullying It is a way of temporarily escaping reality Suicide This is the last act that is taken when the victim does not know how else to escape the attacks.

How can we stop Cyber Bullying? Encourage teens to tell adults or authorities Blocking people from being able to message them. Do not give out passwords to social media Encourage teens to not share personal information online Parents ma want to wait until high school to allow their children to have their own , cell phones, or private social media accounts

What is internet Safety? Internet safety is the knowledge of maximizing the user's personal safety and security risks on private information and property associated with using the internet, and the self-protection from computer crime in general.

How can using the internet be dangerous? Authorities have found that people go online and create fake profiles to lure young teens to spots. People have the capability to steal your identity, bank account numbers or credit card number.

Issues involved in using classroom technology As technology has become more persistent in the classroom, researchers have states that the obvious issues such as texting and recurrent social media visits have become more popular. Cell phones have been made “off limits” while in school so that they do not pose distractions to students during the school day. Along with the obvious issues with technology in the classroom, there are also legal, social, and ethical issues involved in classroom technology.

Legal Issues Schools have had to filter software to keep students from veering off into inappropriate sites. Plagiarism has become a bigger issue since students have been exposed to the internet in the classroom.

Social Issues People now are starting to withdraw and do not have conversations face to face. It is harder for individuals to confront others without the distance of their phone or keyboard in the middle of them.

Ethical Issues One of the major ethical issues that I have found is that some people are not too eager about the school systems moving solely to technology.

Evaluation I have learned what different features that I can use with PowerPoint. While preparing the presentation, I also thought about the age level that I would like to teach and about what type of information, content and how that content should be presented. The most useful resources were different articles on the Helmke Library Website and other webpages online. I could use this project if and when I decide to teach in a middle school setting. This information is extremely important and it is something that young adults need to be aware of.

Other things that can be done with PowerPoint are; creating review game, making flash cards, or even taking notes in the note box when a professor gives you the PowerPoint used in class ahead of time. This project could be further improved by using more transitions, or by using more examples that relate to the class. However, this can only be done once the teacher gets acquainted with their students. If this was a student project, I would evaluate it based on the information that was given throughout the presentation, the amount of visible effort that was put into the presentation, how well the tools were used in PowerPoint, and grammar/spelling errors. After doing this project, I would like to get better with the other Word programs such as Excel. Once I know the basics I would be more comfortable moving onto using different technological applications on Smart Boards, Tablets, etc.
