Cause of the American Revolution THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

 1754 – 1763  Part of the world-wide Seven Years War Fought Between:  France vs. Britain  Native American Allies THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR

 Ohio River Valley land was VERY desirable…why? 1.Near water  Easier transportation  Good for trade 2.Chance to take over more land in the West LAND: OHIO RIVER VALLEY

 POWER: Both France and Britain wanted to be the stronger power in North America  PRIDE: France and Britain argued about who claimed the Ohio River Valley land first WHY WAR?

 French explorer named LaSalle claimed a huge area of land  French fur traders moved into the Ohio River Valley land, even though it wasn’t part of LaSalle’s land claim. These fur traders traded with Native Americans in the area. SO WHO DID CLAIM THE LAND FIRST?

 British fur traders gradually moved into the Ohio River Valley land area.  These fur traders also traded with Native Americans in the area, and began to build a better relationship with them than the French…  This made the French angry because the British were trading more goods. WHAT ABOUT THE BRITISH?

 An alliance is a partnership – a team – between two groups of people. They support each other in war.  French  Potawamatomies, Ottawas, Delaware, Shawnee  British  Iroquois NATIVE AMERICAN ALLIANCES Lived near French missions Had broken away from the Iroquois

 Battle of Fort Oswego (1756)  French captured the British fort, took 1,700 prisoners captive  Battle at Fort William Henry (1757)  French took fort  Many British killed  Native American allies violate agreement and kill many British soldiers NEW YORK STATE AND THE WAR

 Battle of Fort Niagara (1759)  British victory  Battle of Fort Carillon (1759)  British Victory  France did not defend it and tried to blow up fort  Britain took it over and renamed it Fort Ticonderoga  Becomes important during American Revolution NEW YORK STATE AND THE WAR

The British! The war ended on February 10, 1763 with the Treaty of Paris. The British took control of the French land in North America. AND THE WINNER IS…

 The colonists are happy – they have a lot of new land to settle…  BUT WAIT! The British issued a proclamation after the war that stated all of the land west of the Alleghany Mts. Would be left for the Native Americans  This was called the Proclamation of HOORAY?

PROCLAMATION OF 1763…WHY?  The British wanted to prevent future conflicts with the Native Americans, so they kept the land for them. Colonists were angry – they had wanted that land for themselves.
