Working with Drink Wise North West & NW Director of Public Health & NW Community Pharmacy Network Alcohol Screening & Brief Intervention Service [ or Identification and Brief Advice (IBA) Service ]  NW SHA has the worst alcohol statistics of all SHAs  10 people a day die in NW due to alcohol related illness.  1 person every 7 minutes is admitted to hospital in NW for alcohol- related reasons (6% nationally-and rising)  More than 73,000 recorded crimes in NW were alcohol related and 50,000 were violent.  Cost to NHS –around £2.7 billion per year (nationally)

Working with Drink Wise North West & NW Director of Public Health & NW Community Pharmacy Network Business Case :  Based on DH ready reckoner tool  Assumes that 1 in every 4 screens identifies at “risk drinking”  Which results in cost savings due to A & E and hospital admissions  Based on each pharmacy delivering 2 IBA’s per week : 100 pharmacies – net cost saving to NHS is £215,107 per annum 1000 pharmacies – net cost saving to NHS is £2,151,067 per annum 1,574 (total pharmacies in NW ) – net cost saving to NHS is £3,385,779

Working with Drink Wise North West & NW Director of Public Health & NW Commmunity Pharmacy Network Commissioning Pack –business case, template SLA and SOP,and links to training and accreditation : - Accreditation (pharmacy module) on DH alcohol website CPD module on (no.172) - CPPE module and “local training solutions”  RPSGB web based tool to collate pharmacy data and audits.  Evaluation – AERC bid -part of MRC framework to develop a large study controlled trial in 2012.

Working with Drink Wise North West & NW Regional Director Public Health & NW Community Pharmacy Network Communications :  LPCs  PCO commissioners, public health leads, DAATs  SHA clinical leaders network –GPs  Pharmacy clinical leaders in other regions.  DH Alcohol Policy Team  DH Pharmacy /Public Health Leadership Forum  Royal Pharmaceutical Society  University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) and Liverpool John Moores University are partners in research bids (multi-disc team)

Working with Drink Wise North West & NW Director of Public Health & NW Community Pharmacy Network Current position & early results :  46 pharmacies in NHS Wirral - Nov 2007  10 pharmacies in NHS Blackpool – April 2010 Results at 6 months – 39% identified at increasing or high risk Potential cost savings may be greater than DH business case which estimates 1 in 4 (25%) will be identified. Average audit result 8; low 84; increasing 50; high 4  Rolling out in NHS Knowsley, Oldham, Liverpool, Warrington  By 2011, there could be 200 pharmacies in this large scale project including PCOs in other regions e.g. Portsmouth, IOW.

Working Drink Wise North West & NW Regional Director Public Health & NW Community Pharmacy Network  Pharmacy service can target potential high risk people e.g. those who come for “hang over” remedies, EHC, gastric problems, falls, vulnerable groups, hypertension, etc.  Pharmacy sees different people from those who may visit a GP practice, especially in areas of health inequality.  There may be a link in that local people may be more open to disclosing their true behaviour to their peers (pharmacy staff )
