Are parents to blame? By: Shea McMurry

Why did I choose this topic? Researched in another class and grew an interest Was not familiar with the topic Had questions and concerns

Paper Driving Question: Is childhood obesity an effect of parent neglect? Thesis: There are those who will argue parents are to blame for the health and eating habits of their children while others would claim this by saying it is a societal effect on these children that enables obesity.

Interesting Facts Nottingham England case Being overweight it is the primary cause of Type 2 Diabetes. Each hour spent watching television can increase a child’s chances of becoming obese by 2 percent.

Product Created a wikispace for parents and children Offers healthy snack ideas, simple exercises, helpful links to other sites and fun family activities.

Product Process Result of an idea that was altered many times Researched components that I wanted in my wikispace Got help from friends with taking pictures and asked repeated “How does this look?” questions regarding wikispace.

Process

Impact of Product Hoping visitors of wikispace will try some of the ideas. My family started trying some of the snacks and are getting involved in a few of the activities. Not made to be a cure or prescribed treatment for obese children.

What I learned from the Product Learned how to make a website. You can make almost anything into a fun exercise activity. This, in turn, further proved my theory that you can always find a silver lining. Planning is key.

Connection Paper is dedicated to pinning down the cause of overweight and obese children. Regardless of the cause, there needs to be some way to help.

Reflection + - Learned the process of completing a demanding project Became a better writer Learned how to compile information from different sources into a conclusion Had fun! Did not have a mentor Fell behind on progress assignments Was not strong when it came to prioritizing Scheduling time for product (outside of class) around work schedule.

Future Plans Career is not health based, however it involves young children. I plan to be an early elementary school teacher. This project will give me a head start when I need to plan assignments.
