Effects of Parents Separation to a Lasallian’s Academic Performance Group 4

Review of Related Literature -Conflict between parents, being witnessed by children will lead to anxiety and depression. Burton (2012) -They are less likely to complete high school and have high chances of being mentally poor during their adulthood. (Case, McLanahan and Lin, 2000)

Review of Related Literature -Children 1-5 years old, living with a single parent, will more likely behave abnormally than those staying with both parents. Chartrand, et. al. (2008) -DiPrete (1981) found higher rates of discipline problems among students from single- parent families.

Review of Related Literature -Single parents have higher rates of poverty (Bogue 1985), -have less time for the supervision and care of their children (Hetherington, Camara, and Featherman 1981), -may have emotional problems stemming from divorce and separation (Hetherington et al. 1981). -Each of these factors can be expected to have negative implications for school outcomes.

Hypothesis Separation of parents has a negative effect to a student’s academic performance.

Research Questions - Will there be a change in the performance of the student if the parents are separated or not? -Does the separation of the parents have a negative or a positive effect to the student’s academic performance?

Methodology Research Design, Primary Source Survey Method Secondary Source Articles, research papers, related books, and the Internet. Unit of Analysis Students with complete and separated parents Study Area De La Salle University Sample size 76 Techniques of Data Collection Questionnaires were developed and finalized before executing the survey Data Processing and Analysis Frequency Distribution and Percentages

Recommendations Look on other factors that could affect their grades. Include people outside of DLSU in the survey. Survey more students with separated, divorced or annulled parents. Research more on the positive effects of it.
