THE HISTORY OF STEROIDS In the early 1930s, German scientists discovered the drug in modern pharmaceutical form. Almost 2 decades later the first serious scientific attention to anabolic steroid came upon in 1950s when methandrostenolone or Dianabol was approved by the FDA for use in US in 1958 after it was known to have had promising trials in other countries. In 1972 a study was done. No big difference could be noticed between the people who received anabolic steroid injection and those who were given placebo. Later in 1996, the National Institutes of Health decided to examine the effect of the drug by injecting testosterone enanthate in high doses intramuscularly at the rate of 600 mg/week for 10 weeks. The results were very noticeable with increased muscle mass and decreased fat mass. As of January 20, 2005, the Anabolic Steroid Control Act of 2004, states that both anabolic steroids and prohormones are now controlled substances.

ANABOLIC STEROIDS The steroids we hear about the most are Anabolic Steroids. Anabolic Steroids are drugs that mimic the effects of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone in the body. They increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup of cellular tissue (anabolism), especially in muscles. Growth hormone is a 191- amino acid, single-chain polypeptide that is synthesized, stored, and secreted by the somatotroph cells within the pituitary gland. SHOULD STEROIDS BE LEGAL?  Some people argue that steroids should be legal. If you think about it they shouldn't be. They don’t alter your mind or get you “high”. They don’t effect you like drugs such as marijuana or heroin do. Steroids enhance your performance. I understand why cocaine and other drugs like that are illegal. You can overdose on those and they cause people to committee crime and get murdered. You cant over dose on steroids and there isn't really a big drug trade or drug mafia with steroids. The people that think badly are just jealous they don’t look like Arnold or anyone that uses steroids.

CHRIS BENOIT MURDER SUICIDE  On June 25, 2007 police found chris benoit and his son and wife dead in there house. Evidence showed that benoit had killed his son and wife then killed himself. It was thought that an excessive use of steroids had caused him to do what he did. Later tests showed that the steroids in his system didn’t cause his actions but head injuries he sustained throughout his years of wrestling caused him to do it.

MLB STEROID SCANDAL  Numerous baseball players have stated that there is drug use within the league. David Wells stated that "25 to 40 percent of all Major Leaguers are juiced". Jose Canseco stated on 60 Minutes and in his tell-all book Juiced that as many as 80% of players used steroids, and that he credited steroid use for his entire career. In February 2009 after statements came out that Alex Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003 the year he was MVP. He admitted to having used performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) between 2001 and Mark McGwire admitted in January 2010 that he had used steroids off and on for over a decade.
