“Second Timothy” Paul’s Example of Enduring Basic Truths about Enduring “Present Yourselves Approved…” “Remind Them of These Things…” “Shun and Avoid…” 2 Timothy 2:8-18, 23, 24 Workbook by Reg Ginn Pages Paul’s Example of Enduring Basic Truths about Enduring “Present Yourselves Approved…” “Remind Them of These Things…” “Shun and Avoid…” 2 Timothy 2:8-18, 23, 24 Workbook by Reg Ginn Pages Lesson 4

Paul’s Example of Enduring 2 Timothy 2:9-10 “…I endure all things for the sake of the elect…” (v.10) –“…That they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.” (v.10) –Personal examples are always effective in teaching a lesson –For preaching his gospel, he suffered trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains (v.9) Paul tells Timothy, “But the word of God is not chained” (v.9) –Paul may have been silenced but the preaching of the Word continued on Page 18

Paul’s Example of Enduring 2 Timothy 2:9-10 Differences in Paul’s two imprisonments FirstSecond - Innocent of any crime- Charged a an evildoer - Lived in his own house- Chained, restricted - Able to preach- Others had to preach - Brothers in Christ - All had left him except visited him Luke and Christ visited him Luke and Christ Page 19

Basic Truths About Enduring 2 Timothy 2:11-13 “This is a faithful saying:…” “If we died with Him, we shall also live with Him.” (v.11) “If we endure, we shall also reign with Him.” (v.12) “If we deny Him, He also will deny us.” (v.12) “If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.” (v.13) Notice the conditional word “IF” –If we are faithful, God’s goodness will be upon us –If we are faithless, God’s severity will be upon us Page 19

“Present Yourselves Approved…” 2 Timothy 2:15 “…present yourself approved to God…” (v.15) –A worker who does not need to be ashamed –Rightly dividing the word of truth Not only the apostle anxiously watching what he does, but God is also “inspecting” his activities Timothy had to be careful to “rightly divide” the word of truth (v.15) –“Dividing” probably means applying [dispensing] the gospel in a manner appropriate to the needs and circumstances of each case in solving the varying problems Page 20

“Remind Them of These Things…” 2 Timothy 2:14 “Remind them of these things…” (v.14) “…charging them before the Lord not to strive about words to no profit…” “These things” refer to the truths [faithful sayings] just mentioned in verses Striving about words to no profit “ruins” [destroys] the hearers Paul “charged” Timothy to assure that their hurtful misuse of word would be stopped Notice the use of “words” in the Scriptures on p. 21 Page 21

“Shun and Avoid…” 2 Timothy 2:16-18, 23, 24 “But shun [avoid, to keep clear of] profane and idle [vain] babblings…” (v.16) –“Profane” means “that which lacks all relationship to God –“Babblings” means “empty sounds” –They cause an increase to more ungodliness –They spread like a cancer, spreading to other members –These discussions divert attention from important things Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort (v.17) –They strayed concerning the truth (v.18) –They were saying that the resurrection is already past Page 22

“Shun and Avoid…” 2 Timothy 2:16-18, 23, 24 “But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes…” (v.23) –“Foolish” means “void of understanding or sound judgment” –“Ignorant” means “destitute of knowledge” –“Disputes” means “to strive or contend in opposition” –They generate strife (v.23) –“…a servant of the Lord must not quarrel, but be gentle to all…” (v.24) Men often dispute about trifles, unimportant issues, questions without answers, words to no profit Page 22
