INTERNATIONAL PROJECT “EATING IS BELIEVING” TOMATO by Gunkova Julia, Project by Gunkova Julia, the 8th form pupil of school No 4, the town of Lisky Voronezh region. the town of Lisky Voronezh region. Teacher: Razuvaeva V. G

The aim of my project is to answer the questions: What vegetables and fruits are typical for our people? What are the national dishes of our countries? How are they cooked? What can national cuisine tell us?

GUESS WHAT IT IS It’s a vegetable It`s usually red or pink It has sour or sweet taste Homeland - South America It`s round, the size of an apple It is used in salads, and processed into ketchup or tomato soup.

The name comes from the Italian golden apple. Homeland - South America, where there are still some wild and semi-shape tomato. In the middle of the XVI century, the tomato was in Spain, Portugal, and then to Italy, France and other European countries, the earliest recipe for a dish of tomatoes in a cookbook published in Naples in In the XVIII century, the tomato falls to Russia, where it was first cultivated as an ornamental plant. For a long time, tomatoes were considered inedible and even poisonous. European gardeners planted them as an exotic ornamental plant.

The tomato is now grown and eaten around the world. It is used in diverse ways, including raw in salads, and processed into ketchup or tomato soup. Unripe green tomatoes can also be breaded and fried, used to make salsa, or pickled. Their consumption is believed to benefit the heart, among other organs. They contain the carotene lycopene, one of the most powerful natural antioxidants.

Vegetarian Stuffed Tomatoes with Rice Ingredients: 4 large firm tomatoes 2 tbsp olive oil 1/2 cup onion, diced 2 cups pre-cooked rice 1/3 tsp allspice salt and pepper to taste

Preparation: Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Cut 1/2 inch off tops of tomatoes. Use a small knife or a melon baller to gently scoop out the insides of the tomatoes, being careful not to cut through the bottoms. Sautee the onions for a few minutes in olive oil, until soft. In a large bowl, combine the rice with the remaining ingredients, then combine the sauteed onions as well.
