Paul’s Plight In Asia 2 Corinthians 1: 8 – 11 Paul’s Plight In Asia 2 Corinthians 1: 8 – 11 Opened His Heart

2 Corinthians 1:8-9 For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Paul’s Dilemma:

Excessive Weight Excessive Weight “Beyond Our Strength”

Excessive Weight Excessive Weight “Despaired of Life Itself”

“Yes, we had the sentence of death in ourselves…” (v.9a) Within Their Own Hearts They Had Pronounced The Death Sentence Upon Themselves

Lenski Makes This Pertinent Comment “Paul and Timothy have been brought to the point beyond ability, to the point of despair, were all struggle, even mental struggle, was useless, where they waited only for the death blow to fall…Not even the least confidence in themselves or in their resources was left to them… they were absolutely naked and stripped” and that was God’s purpose

2 Corinthians 1:9b “…But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” God’s Purpose:

Where Paul Started

2 Corinthians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort

2 Corinthians 1:9b “…But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.” To Persuade Unto i.e. Move Or Induce One To Persuasion To Do Something 12

GOD, THE DELIVERER 2 Corinthians 1:10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.

GOD, THE DELIVERER 2 Corinthians 1:10 He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.

Romans 8:24 For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? Hebrews 6:19 This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil,

If There Are Abundant Sufferings Surely God Will Provide Abundant Mercies

2 Corinthians 1:5 For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too.

Ephesians 3:20-21 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

God Is A Merciful Comforter

2 Corinthians 1:4 who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

God

2 Corinthians 7:5-8 For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—fighting without and fear within. 6 But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 7 and not only by his coming but also by the comfort with which he was comforted by you, as he told us of your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me, so that I rejoiced still more. 8 For even if I made you grieve with my letter, I do not regret it—though I did regret it, for I see that that letter grieved you, though only for a while.

2 Corinthians 1:6-7 If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. 7 Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.
