CITY OF RİZE GEOGRAPHY The city of Rize is built around a small bay on the Black Sea coast, on a narrow strip of flat land between the sea and the mountains behind. Rize enjoys a mild, extremely wet climate and therefore the surrounding countryside is rich with vegetation and is attracting more and more visitors each year. Rize is a center for processing and shipping the tea grown in the surrounding area. The secondary activity is fishing. Rize is linked by road with Trabzon (41 miles [66 km] west), Hopa (55 miles [88 km] east, on the Georgian border, and Erzurum (north). The nearest airport is in Trabzon.

Sacred & Ancient Sumela Monastery The Sümela Monastery is a Greek Orthodox monastery, standing at the foot of a steep cliff and lying at an altitude of approximately 1200 meters. Founded in the year 386 AD during the reign of the Emperor Theodosius I ( ), legend has it that two priests undertook the founding of the monastery on the site after having discovered a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary in a cave on the mountain. The principal elements of the Monastery complex are the Rock Church, several chapels, kitchens, student rooms, a guesthouse, a library, and a sacred spring revered by Orthodox Greeks.
