Southern Illinois Its northernmost point is in southern Illinois and extends southward into eastern Arkansas and west Tennessee Millions of people live on or near the fault

The New Madrid plate boundary is very unique and isn’t really considered a boundary anymore. The New Madrid boundary might have been part of an ancient plate boundary.

Earthquakes Intense folding of rocks in the locked sections More than 200 earthquakes recorded each year. 120 MILES SOUTHWARD from the area of Charleston, Missouri, and Cairo, Illinois, through New Madrid and Caruthersville, following Interstate 55 to Blytheville and on down to Marked Tree, Arkansas. It crosses five state lines and cuts across the Mississippi River in three places and the Ohio River in two places.

A DAMAGING EARTHQUAKE in this AREA, 6.0 or greater, occur about every 80 years (the last one in 1895). The results would cause serious damage to schools and masonry buildings from Memphis to St Louis. A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE in this AREA, 7.5 or greater, happens every years (the last one in 1812). There is a 25% chance by A New Madrid Fault rupture this size would be felt throughout half the United States and damage 20 states or more. Missouri alone could anticipate losses of at least $6 billion from such an event.

All the states that around this fault need to be aware that a major earthquake on the Richter Scale could happen at anytime. In 1811, there were not that many people living in the area when the quake hit, even though it did enough damage to destroy almost everything and make the mighty Mississippi River flow backwards. The New Madrid Earthquake that hit in 1811 and 1812 was one of the most powerful earthquakes to hit the Midwest in the time that records have been kept. If the New Madrid fault came alive today, it would do so much worse than it was in We have more people living in the areas that could be affected, more buildings and other structures have been built. With this potential threat, there would be totally devastation.
