Three Pyramids of Giza By: Olivia and Kaitlyn

Three Pyramids The three pyramids are: pyramid of Khufu, pyramid of Khafre, and the pyramid of Menkaure. The Khufu is the largest and was built in 2500 B.C. The Khafre pyramid is the second largest of the three and was built in 2558-2532 B.C. The Menkaure pyramid is the smallest of the three and was built in 2490-2472 B.C.

Gateway to the Stars The three pyramids mirror the three stars on Orion’s belt. The pyramids sizes were to mirror the stars. It didn't matter how much power the pharaohs had, the pyramids were going to be built to mirror the stars on Orion’s Belt no matter what.

Statistics There are actually over 100 pyramids in Egypt, but only the Three Pyramids of Giza have significant value. The pyramid of Khufu has 2,300,000 blocks of limestone and granite. (about 6.5 per block) The pyramid of Khafre’s blocks were also built out of limestone but only weighed 2.5 tons per block. The pyramid of Menkaure has a weight that is unknown.

More Statistics The Khufu pyramid is 446 ft tall, the Khafre pyramid is 471 ft tall, and the Menkaure pyramid is 220 ft tall. Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure are all related.

Big Tourist Attraction Big tourist attraction and brings in a lot of money to Egypt cities. Tourists are so attracted to the three pyramids of Giza because it is one of the seven wonders of the world and it is the only one still standing today. Another reason that people visit the pyramids is because it tells the history about Egypt and how the people lived back then. There are about 117,396 tourists who visit Egypt each year from the United States.

Disappearing Pyramids The Khafre pyramid was closed in January of 1999 because of the humidity of all the visitors bodies that also lead to the build up of salt deposits. All three pyramids are affected by the earthquake in the middle ages. Weather is a big role in how fast the pyramids deteriorate.
