Prayer in Islam Time Clocks Prayer Mats Compass Sacred Book Prayer beads

The Muslims’ sacred book – the Quran. The word Quran comes from the Arabic word for ‘recite’. The words were recited to the prophet Muhammad who then recited them to others. The Quran used in the mosque today is always written in Arabic. There are 114 chapters or surahs in it and it guides the Muslims on how to lead a good life according to the will of Allah.

A compass to find Qiblah All Muslims pray towards Makkah in Saudi Arabia. Qiblah is the Arabic word for the direction of Makkah. Sometimes the Muslim may need the compass in order to find the direction of Makkah. Roughly Makkah is to the south-east of Britain.

Prayer Mat - Sajjadah A Muslim must pray in a clean place. This is why many Muslims use prayer mats when praying. The mats usually include detailed patterns and a picture of a mosque.

Time clocks It is important that Muslims pray together at the same time. In the mosque there are special clocks showing the correct prayer times for the five daily prayers and the special prayer for Friday prayers. Fajr – morning Zuhr – lunch time Asr – afternoon Maghrib – evening Isha - night Jummah – Friday prayers.

Prayer beads – Tasbih Sometimes a Muslim might hold prayer beads to help them to pray. There are 99 beads on the tasbih – one bead for each one of the 99 names for Allah.
