“Technology in the Classroom: Helpful or Harmful?” Article “Technology in the Classroom: Helpful or Harmful?” By: Samantha Cleaver www.education.com

Shelley Pasnik, director of the Center for Education and Technology “Incorporating technology into the classroom requires a double innovation” Shelley Pasnik, director of the Center for Education and Technology

Technology and Teaching Teachers have two steps when they first receive technology: 1. LEARN it yourself! 2. Decide whether or not it supports the class objectives and curriculum. Teachers must have a solid understanding before trying to teach it to students. If it doesn’t fit into your classroom, don’t try to force it!

Technology and Teaching Challenges : Restructuring Lessons Large information bases may lead to questions that can’t be answered. Avoiding Challenges: Discouraging the use of technology in already well organized lessons Keeping new Technology put away until it can be reconfigured into lessons.

Technology and Teaching Benefits: Personalized learning experiences means better understanding Interaction allows gore practice and review in memorization based learning Allows for more overall time spent on learning Allows teachers to keep track of progress and allows more time to communicate progress

Maximizing Your Child’s Tech Time Look for Connections “Technology used in isolation is less effective than when it’s integrated into a curricular set of activities,” -Pasnik. Don’t Assume Don’t base your view of technology off of someone else’s opinion. It’s All in the Application “The success of any tool depends on how it’s used”

Looking Ahead “Technology may be changing the experience of education, but the role of teachers and parents grow increasingly important as they become the experts and guides for new learning resources.” “Teachers remain the constant in an ever-changing classroom environment, which will continue to shift with the technological tides.”

David Vinca, founder and executive director of eSpark Learning “However technology is used in class, it has the opportunity to be a game changer.” David Vinca, founder and executive director of eSpark Learning
