Collapsible Bike Eugene Chang

About me I am born in New York City and live in Queens I am Majoring in Product Design I attend Parsons The New School for Design I commute to school

Collapsible Bike The idea came about when I had an idea of making a bike easier to collapse. A lot of collapsible bikes have many folds and turns to get it to the shape it is. My major is Product Design, so I thought it would be a good practice if I built an actual prototype.

Sketches

Models

Finding Materials This entire bike was made from recycle material. I did not spend any money on this bike. The tires, handle bar, bike seat, and pedals were all from a bike I found. The wood are from the green room (2 west 13 th street, 4 th floor) and the 9 th floor wood shop. The nuts and bolts were also savaged from the 9 th floor woodshop.

Process of making I took the bike apart and began making. I just made it based off my sketch model

Half done

Problems I ran into The back tire was attached too high. It puts too much weight on the hinge that is attaching it. Therefore I have to lower the hinge until both tires line up on the floor.

Final piece

Actual Bike The actual bike would be made of metal of course. The metal that will make this bike frame would be Carbon Fiber. It would average around $400 -$500 Carbon Fiber is one of the strongest metals along with being very light.

What this bike is made for and Who This bike is made for people who commute. It is made easy where the person can just pull out two pins and compress the bike together and fold the tire over. Then slipping the two pins back to place locking it in the closed positions. This allows the commuter to roll it down and up the stairs. To transport it around they can just roll it on the two wheels. Thus allowing the person who owns this bike, to transport the bike without lifting it.

Reflection If I had more time I would totally fix it up. There are so many things I can change about it to help it collapse easier. Also I would had more support pieces. It is not structurally strong as of now. It is also missing a few parts, such as the gears along with the chain and pedals. I would make it fold even smaller. This bike was made so it can be rolled around. Other collapsible bikes are made to be carried around. I found it to be easier to roll around because it takes the weight off of people.
