Learning Objectives I can recite and remember the 10 new vocabulary words/numbers. I can write and spell the new numbers correctly with at least 80% accuracy after completing the lesson and all of its materials. I can, with the help of a calculator, solve math problems using the numbers given in Spanish.

Pronunciation Practice On the following slides, I will be trying to include pronunciation guides for those of you reading this from the hard copies. For those of you doing this lesson online, I have included links to pronunciations. Try pronouncing each word a couple times when you see them.

100 = Ciento or Cien* One hundred *Be sure to copy the following numbers onto your vocabulary sheet found with your lesson materials. Pronounced= “See-en” http://www.forvo.com/word/cien/ *More on the difference between Ciento and Cien on the next slide. 100 = Ciento or Cien*

¿Ciento o Cien? In Spanish, Ciento is the general word they use when counting to mean 100. When describing that you have 100 of a certain thing (or noun), you would use “cien” Por ejemplo: “Tengo cien años.” o “Hay cien alumnos en la clase.”

200 = Doscientos Two hundred Notice that 200 is just the word “two” and “hundred” made plural put together. Pronounced- Dos-see-en-tos (like “toes” in English, but actually pronounced with an ‘s’ sound- not a ‘z’ sound. Remember this) http://www.forvo.com/word/doscientos/#es 200 = Doscientos

300 = Trescientos Three hundred Again, this number is “three” and “hundreds” in Spanish. This pattern is normal with a few exceptions all the way to one-thousand. Pronounced- Tres-see-en-tos http://www.forvo.com/word/trescientos/#es 300 = Trescientos

400 = Cuatrocientos Four hundred By now, you probably get how these are pronounced, so please repeat them aloud and review often. Can you say 100 to 400 counting by 100s now? http://www.forvo.com/word/cuatrocientos/#es 400 = Cuatrocientos

500 = Quinientos Five hundred Pronounced- Key-knee-en-tos http://www.forvo.com/word/quinientos/#es 500 = Quinientos

600 = Seiscientos Six hundred This is another “normal” one: 6 + 100s. http://www.forvo.com/word/seiscientos/#es 600 = Seiscientos

700- Setecientos* Seven hundred *Notice this one tries to trick you a bit. It is not SIETE + Cientos, but SETE-Cientos Pronounced: Set-ay-see-en-tos http://www.forvo.com/word/setecientos/#es 700- Setecientos*

800 = Ochocientos Eight hundred Another regular one. http://www.forvo.com/word/ochocientos/#es *If you are listening online, you may notice the people pronouncing the words have a slight lisp; this is a difference in dialect- or a difference in how they speak in Spain. Oh-cho-see-en-tos is how Latin Americans and myself pronounce it 800 = Ochocientos

900 = Novecientos Nine hundred Irregular one: Pronounced- No-vay-see-en-tos Vay rhymes with “day,” but with a “v.” http://www.forvo.com/word/novecientos/#es 900 = Novecientos

One thousand *This word is pronounced like we pronounce “meal.” When saying exactly 1,000 in Spanish, it is typical to say “un mil” (a thousand). http://www.forvo.com/word/mil/#pt (Scroll down to “Galician” pronunciation for the best pronunciation) 1000 = Mil

Can you recite them all? Can you recite them without looking? Can you recite them from 1,000 down to 0 going down by hundreds? Can you recite every other hundred (ej: 100, 300, etc.)

Combining numbers Now is when we get into complex numbers. Take a moment to go over the other numbers on your vocabulary sheet. We are going to be combining the numbers you just learned with the ones you already learned.

When do I use “y?” In Spanish, when you have a number in the 10s column AND the 1s column, there is an “and” (or “y”) added between the last and second last number. I will now give you WAY more examples than is probably necessary to make sure you understand that on the next slide!

Numbers with “y” Spanish English Doscientos cuarenta y seis Ochocientos ochenta y ocho Setecientos sesenta y cinco Cuatrocientos noventa y seis Novecientos veintinueve* *In this last one, the letter “i” connecting 20 and 9 in Spanish represents “y” or “and” in English. Two hundred forty-six Eight hundred eighty-eight Seven hundred sixty-five Four hundred ninety-six Nine hundred twenty-nine

Hundreds column and ones column When combining a hundreds column number with a ones column number, you will NOT use “y.” For example: Doscientos dos = 202 Quinientos nueve = 509 Novecientos uno = 901
