THE METRIC SYSTEM Converting Units

COMMON CORE STANDARDS 6.MD.1. Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

OBJECTIVES Students will be able to: Convert metric measurements using 2 different strategies Solve real world metric conversion problems Use a mnemonic device to help remember the order of the metric system

Mass - weight In the metric system, all units are defined in terms of a basic unit. The basic unit of mass in the metric system is the gram.

Everyday items you could use to associate with mass in the metric system. milligram - a grain of salt gram - large paper clip kilogram - math textbook

Mass - grams 1 gram = 1000 milligrams 1 kilogram = 1000 grams

Measurement Conversion Strategy I Using a bridge map can help organize your thinking when converting from one metric unit to another.

Bridge Map as (just like) Relating factor

Metric Length Conversion Example: 1 kg = 1000 g 3000 3 kg = _____ g Large to small 3 x 1000 = 3000 1 kg 3 kg as 1000 g (just like) 3000 g is equal to Relating factor X 1000

Metric Length Conversion Example: 1000 g = 1 kg 6 6000 g = ___ kg Small to large 6000 ÷ 1000 = 6 1 kg 6 kg as 1000 g (just like) 6000 g is equal to Relating factor ÷ 1000

Metric Length Conversion Example: 1 g = 1000 mg 7000 7 g = _____ mg Large to small 7 x 1000 = 7000 1 g 7 g as 1000 mg (just like) 7000 g is equal to Relating factor X 1000

Metric Length Conversion Example: 1000 mg = 1 g 4 4000 mg = ___ g Small to large 4000 ÷ 1000 = 4 1 g 4 g as 1000 mg (just like) 4000 mg is equal to Relating factor ÷ 1000

Capacity - volume In the metric system, all units are defined in terms of a basic unit. The basic unit of capacity in the metric system is the liter.

Everyday items you could use to associate with capacity in the metric system. milliliter - 10 drops of food coloring liter - a small pitcher of water kiloliter – hot tub or spa

Capacity - liters 1 liter = 1000 milliliters 1 kiloliter = 1000 liters

Bridge Map as (just like) Relating factor

Metric Length Conversion Example: 1 L = 1000 mL 9000 9 L = _____ mL Large to small 9 x 1000 = 9000 1 L 9 L as 1000 mL (just like) 9000 mL is equal to Relating factor X 1000

Metric Length Conversion Example: 1000 mL = 1 L 2 2000 mL = ___ L Small to large 2000 ÷ 1000 = 2 1 L 2 L as 1000 mL (just like) 2000 mL is equal to Relating factor ÷ 1000

Try These: 23.4 234mm = _______cm 1500mL = _______L 400g =_______kg 1.5 0.4

Let’s Try Another Strategy!

Making Conversions You can convert from one metric unit to another by multiplying or dividing by a power of 10 (10, 100, 1,000, etc). When changing from larger units to smaller units, you multiply. When changing from smaller units to larger units, you divide.

LADDER METHOD Strategy II To convert to a larger unit, move decimal point to the LEFT or divide by 10. To convert to a smaller unit, move decimal point to the RIGHT or multiply by 10. Kilo 1000 Hecto 100 Deca 10 Base Units meter gram Liter 1 Deci 0.1 Centi 0.01 Milli 0.001

USE THE LADDER METHOD 3000 mg = ______ g Step 1: Determine if you are going to go up or down the ladder. (To the right or to the left of the base unit) Step 2: Determine how many steps there are from milligrams to grams. Step 3: Move the decimal point the amount of places that was determined in steps 1 & 2. Kilo Hecto Deca Base Units meter gram Liter Deci Centi Milli

Now Try These: 6578 kg=_________g 330mm=___________cm 6,578,000 6578 kg=_________g 330mm=___________cm 5010 dl=___________ml 250cm=_____m 33 501000 2.5_ Kilo 1000 Hecto 100 Deca 10 Base Units meter gram Liter 1 Deci 0.1 Centi 0.01 Milli 0.001
