Team B.A.D. ( Brett, Andrew, Devin)

Device Design Our device was constructed using only $22.50 and took us approximately 5 hours to construct. Our Final project used 4 High Power Neodymium Magnets which rotate inside the housing wrapped in our wire. We coiled the 34 AWG enamel coated magnetic wire around the magnet housing and used epoxy to suspend the magnets in the middle of the housing. We used light wood paneling to design the windmill blade which proved to be very effective at generating a high amount of RPM from wind power. We constructed our device using the most powerful magnets we could find under our budget and highly conductive wire. We also used light weight material to increase the amount of RPM’s we could get from the fan input.

Summary of Mechanical and Electrical aspects of device Mechanical 8 blades Area of each blade is 77cm² Height of the machine is.305m The base is.305m X.406m Windspeed from the fan is 8.94m / s Low friction between the wooden dowel and polyvinylchloride bearings

Summary of mechanical and electrical aspects of device Electrical We used ¼X ¼ X ½ inch neodymium magnets Estimated about 1500 coils of 34 AWG magnetic wire 20cm of wire per loop, so approximately 306m of wire used Output 2.75 V during testing Measured resistance 256 Ω

Efficiency and Calculations 1. Calculate length of wire using: 2. Power is calculated using: P = 0.295J 3. Wind power is: P = 27.8J 4. Efficiency is: E =.106%

Design and Construction Issues Our main design issue came from our wire. Because it is so small, we believe that it has too much resistance to support a current. Another problem we encountered was that it was very hard to strip the enamel off the wire without breaking it.

Conclusions Many of our conclusions came from mistakes we made during this projects. Don’t trust the US Postal Service Smaller wire is not always better Scrap wood = free wood Free = Better
