Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario “Baltic Tour” Riga Technical University Leonid Novitskis Professor, Dr. habil. sc. ing. Head of Division

Madrid September 6, 2010 Baltic Tour

Madrid September 6, 2010 Andrus decided to start with a short two days visit to the summer capital of Estonia –city of Parnu. Using several web portals he defined the most convenient transport route and the most comfortable operator of international coach routes in the Baltic States – company Eurolines LuxExpress. Using their web portal he bought the tickets and booked the hotel in Parnu. Scenario 1

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 2 After a short stay in Parnu Andrus continued his trip to Riga (Latvia). During the trip he studied facilities of different hotels in Riga and Lithuania using Wi-Fi Internet connection provided in the bus by LuxExpress coach operator. Using the web portal also made hotel reservation in Riga.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 3 During his four days staying in Riga Andrus met the business partners from RTU and visited BONITA showroom. One of the exhibits presents the computer –based training system based on user individual models and wearable computing environment. Andrus decided to spend several hours and to learn more frequently used Latvian and Lithuanian words (good morning, thank you ) using this wearable computing-based system.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 4 Before moving to Vilnius (the capital of Lithuania) Andris together with his Latvian friends decided to spend several days outside Riga. Using Latvian rural tourism association’s web portal friends booked an old country manor which is located in 120 km from Riga. They also rented a car via Internet. With the help of GPS navigation system friends reached by car selected country manor. On arrival to the manor they understood that there was not wired/Wi-Fi internet connection in the manor.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 5 (1) Next morning Andrus took a boat for fishing. The call on the mobile phone from his business client reached Andrus in the middle of the lake. The client – cargo owner – asked Andrus to provide him urgently with the most suitable conditions of cargo transportation from Chinese factory to one of the ports on the Baltic Sea. Andrus confirmed the receipt of client”s request and by his mobile phone connected to transport and logistics portal

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 5 (2) Andrus entered on-line mobile request and in 10 seconds received from the portal on the screen of his mobile phone reply with basic idea of the conditions of cargo transportation (estimated time of cargo delivery and transportation tariff). Andrus forwarded this information to his client in the form of sms and received confirmation that the basic idea is OK. Andrus informed the client that the detailed information will be sent in two hours.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 5 (3) Coming back from fishing to an old country manor Andrus took his notebook connected with mobile internet modem and connected to the transport portal He formed on-line transport request and received detailed information concerning cargo transportations – besides time of delivery and transportation tariff, name of shipping lines, names of agents in the ports of destination etc.. The client was satisfied with additional information which he received from Andrus and accepted a contract for cargo forwarding. So, mobile phone and mobile internet connection helped Andrus to manage business processes also during the summer holidays.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 6 (1) Coming back to Riga from Latvian country side Andrus continued his travel to Lithuania by bus. Unfortunately the coach operator didn’t provide Wi-Fi internet connection in the bus. Andrus using his notebook with mobile internet modem downloaded the brochure about Vilnius from the web site

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 6 (2) He selected the most interesting cultural event – Jass festival in Trakai – small old town located 25 km from Vilnius. He also booked via internet the hotel in Trakai. Arriving to the concert Andrus didn’t have a possibility to buy the brochure with the concert programme. Using his mobile phone he accessed the web site of Jass event and received on the screen all necessary information.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 7 Arriving on the hotel in Trakai after the Jass concert Andrus tried to watch on TV an international football game, but there was not cable TV at the hotel, only several local TV channels. Andrus connected by mobile internet+notebook several web portals like and watched the game on the screen of his notebook.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Scenario 8 Crossing by bus all three Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) Andrus decided to spend last week of his summer holidays in one of „hot” countries in South Europe. With the help of the portal (The biggest tour operator in the Baltic States registered in Lithuania with branch offices in Latvia and Estonia) he booked very cheap and convenient tour to Spain using „last minutes” opportunities.

Madrid September 6, 2010 Potential partners RTU - ICT provider, regional coordination Riga City Council (Latvia) with its portal Latvian Tourism Development Agency/ Latvian Professional Rural Tourism Association with its portal LuxExpress Estonia – the operator of intenational coach routes in the Baltic region Logitrans Consult (Estonia) – individual tours and cargo forwarding Novatours (Lithuania) – the biggest tour operator in the Baltic States
