We’ve been talking about EiE this week. We read a play about Integrated Pest Management yesterday. What is IPM? Think, Pair, Share REVIEW
Today we’re switching gears… Let’s take another break from history and do a little bit more writing. Today we’ll start to make “How To” books. TODAY…
The learner will listen to and brainstorm more topics about which he can write a How To book. The learner will write his first How To book today. I will learn what a How To book is, and listen as an example is read to me. I will hear some possible topics for my own How To book and maybe brainstorm my own. I will write my first How To book today. OBJECTIVES
How To books teach the reader how to do something. You’ll be writing many How To books this week. It’s a good idea to write a How To book about something with which you’re already familiar. Example: I would write the book How to be a Good Teacher I would NOT write the book How to Pick out the Perfect’s Bridesmaids Dress Here’s an example that was written by a FOURTH GRADER. HOW TO BOOKS – THE BASICS
Here are some possible How To topics about which you could write: How to… Be a good friend Get to school safely Use the Holton cafeteria Have the perfect Saturday Take notes in class Shoot a slap shot Do back tuck Groom a dog Raise chickens Draw a cartoon FIND A TOPIC
Start with SIMPLE TIPS that you have. My example: How to Be a Movie Star SIMPLE Tips: (these tips are pretty general…we’ll explain them later) Work hard Take care of yourself; be healthy Stay away from bad roles Befriend other movie stars Remember your roots Learn different accents THE WRITING PROCESS
Next, you’ll turn each of these simple tips into a page of text by explaining what you mean… Stay Away From Bad Roles We’ve all heard it. Those infamous words: “that role will ruin her career.” There’s a lot of pressure when it comes to being a movie star. Your fans expect a lot from you, your agent expects a lot from you, HOLLYWOOD expects a lot from you. When you begin to feel yourself rising in stardom, you have permission to begin being a little more selective in your roles. You don’t have to say ‘yes’ to the role of “girl on street” or “dead body #4.” Instead, demand that your character have at least a name. Now, no one can predict a box office flop. In fact, if producers were able to tell that their movie was going to bite the big one, it might actually save a lot of time and money. But let me give you a little piece of advice: stay away from any script that involves vampires, aliens, or extended time on a plane. Trust me. No one has ever broken into Hollywood because of a riveting performance as a scare flight attendant or teenaged girl in a vampire/werewolf love triangle. THE WRITING PROCESS
Continue to add more detail to each of your Simple Tips until you have a full-fledged book. If it’s hard for you to write more detail, STOP WHINING and choose a different topic. Clearly you didn’t choose something that you knew enough about. THE WRITING PROCESS
Here are the steps to follow for writing a How To book. 1.Brainstorm possible topics 2.Write the Simple Tips First 3.Explain each of your simple steps in paragraph form. 4. Repeat with a new How To book YOUR TURN
