CREATING GREEN BUILDINGS

Green buildings and the Green building movement seek to: Protect the Environment Conserve Energy Improve occupant experience INTRODUCTION GREEN BUILDINGS

..and one does this by REDUCING LOADS MAKING MORE EFFICIENT SYSTEMS CREATE REGENERATIVE SYSTEMS & RENEWABLE SYSTEM INTRODUCTION GREEN BUILDINGS

Green buildings look at AIR WATER EARTH Using various systems, processes and metrics, Green buildings reduce the impact of the built environment on the local human and natural eco-systems. INTRODUCTION GREEN BUILDINGS

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES … and still do…STEPPED WELLS OF GUJARAT

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES STEPPED WELLS OF GUJARAT The vavs or baolis (stepped wells) of Gujarat consist of 2 parts: a vertical shaft from which water is drawn and the surrounding inclined subterranean passageways, chambers and steps which provide access to the well. The galleries surrounding these wells were deep and intricately carved to great detail to provide cool retreats during the hot summers of Gujarat.

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES STEPPED WELLS OF GUJARAT

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES HAVELIS OF RAJASTHAN Havelis are balconies or wind-inlets designed for semi-outdoor seating in rich merchant houses of Rajasthan. Highly orante pillars and stone trellis work keeps the sun out while allowing for natural ventilation. As a result of this feature, these elaborately adorned houses came to be known as the Havelis of Rajasthan. In Jaisalmer, these Havelis are noted for the efficiency in battling harsh desert climate.

PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES HAVELIS OF RAJASTHAN A typical courtyard in a Haveli showing the air-flow and the cooling by convection currents that are formed. Air movement caused by the temperature differences is utilized in the natural ventilation of the building.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS RAMMED EARTH One of the significant benefits of rammed earth is its high thermal mass. It can absorb heat during the day and release it at night. This moderates daily temperature variations and reduces the need for air - conditioning and heating. Rammed earth can effectively control humidity where unclad walls containing clay are exposed to an internal space. The material mass and clay content of rammed earth allows the building to "breathe" more than concrete structures do.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS RAMMED EARTH Because rammed-earth structures use locally available materials, they usually have low embodied energy and generate very little waste. The soils used are typically sub-soils low in clay, the topsoil being retained for agricultural use. Where soil excavated in preparing the building's foundation can be used, the cost and energy consumption for transportation are minimal. Rammed-earth buildings reduce the need for lumber because the formwork is removable and can be repeatedly reused

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS …but when this is sought?
