DRIVER AWARENESS UPCOMING SEASON CHANGES Fall Deer-vehicle collisions are most common during the fall, keep your eyes moving (Key 3) Farm machinery and farmers are harvesting and will be on the roads more. Share the highway! With farming season comes traffic congestions, watch for slow moving vehicles. (Key 4) Fall also brings Halloween, children, treats and busy streets! Be sure to use extreme caution while the little ones are out and about for this event. Winter Make sure your tires are properly inflated and tread is in good condition. (Pre/Post Trips) Allow plenty of time to reach your destination. (Communicate possible trip time delays during hazardous weather with dispatcher/manager.) Look farther ahead in traffic than normal. Actions of other drivers’ vehicles will alert you to problems and give you the extra time to safely react. (Key 1) Be aware that black ice may be present Use caution when driving over bridges/roadways or travel areas rarely exposed to sunlight

DAY LIGHT HOURS SHORTEN = MORE NIGHT DRIVING  Fatalities on the road occur at a rate three times greater at night than during the day, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration  Nearly 90% of your reaction ability while driving relies on sight, yet the ability to see goes down dramatically at night.  Of all fatal vehicle accidents, 49% occur at night, despite there being fewer drivers on the road. In fact, night driving has a fatality rate per mile nearly triple that of daytime driving  Older drivers have even greater difficulties seeing at night. A 50-year-old driver may need twice as much light to see as well as a 30-year old (regularly scheduled vision checks are important).  One of the most dangerous aspects of night driving is one that we can do little to control: blinding glare from oncoming headlights. The glare can be misleading to the present surroundings, researchers are still conducting major studies in the area to improve existing circumstances.

DAY VISION V.S. NIGHT VISION OSHA /Cardinal Safety Rules state that you have to be at least 10 feet from power lines Notice the difference between the power lines from the day and night picture. How do/should drivers determine the safe zone during nighttime hours?

Please note our states travelled are indicated in white The next few slides show information obtained from the CSA Basic Scores from the Federal Motor Carrier for all carriers, as you will see, some states we travel in are impacted heavily by specific inspections such as maintenance and unsafe driving. Also you will see States in order that incur the most accidents and injury related accidents. Remember: BUCKLE UP, SECURE YOUR LOAD, MOVE OVER/SLOW DOWN LESS THAN 10MPH (posted speed limit) FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES AND QUALITY PRE/POST TRIP INSPECTIONS!
