Institutional responses to domestic violence can -Mask the complexity of the lives of victims which can -Discourage victim participation in criminal cases against their abusers -Discourage battered women from seeing the legal system as a resource -Discourage battered women from following through with a proceeding which they started -Keep battered women from talking about the abuse
