TEACHING By: Mrs. Lobaton

JOB DESCRIPTION A teacher’s first job is to educate his or her students in a specific subject matter. Other tasks are to prepare course material, correct assignments and report a students’ grades to the students and parents or legal guardians. Teachers are responsible for a single subject matter or sometimes several of them; such as; English, French, Math, Science, Ethics, History, and many complementary courses also known as “Options”.

A TYPICAL DAY The day might start off with a staff meeting of some sort, where staff members as a whole or in departments meet to share information about any problems, new courses materials, changed to courses, etc. On average, a teacher teaches for 4 periods a day, but sometimes only 2 or as much as 5, depending on the way the schedule tumbles. The remainder of the day is spent on correcting, planning for future classes, photocopying materials and being on duty in a specified area of the school to prevent shananigans!

SCHOOLING A Bachelor’s of Education is required in the Province of Quebec to teach Kindergarten through grade 11. This is a 4 year program that can be obtained through many universities found across the province. For a teaching certificate in English you would attend either McGill or Concordia University, for French you would attend Université de Montreal or Quebec. There are no specific courses required to enter these programs but they are competitive and a certain grade point average must be had in order to be considered.

Salary A teachers’ salary is based on the number of years spent in school, the number of degrees obtained and the number of years worked which is called seniority.

Hours This was discussed in the previous slide titled a Typical Day. The actual hours that a teacher should be present is from 9:00 am until 3:35 pm. Different start and end times vary by school. Many teachers work extra hours, putting in time with extra curricular activities. These are voluntary and not paid for.

Companies that Exist that Might Hire >There are several ways a teacher can be hired to teach. >One is for the Private sector, so teaching in a Private School. We have several in Montreal, like WIC, LCC, Loyala, Q of A, etc. >The second is to be a private tutor. >The third way is to work for the public sector. Working for school boards like the EMSB, and LBPSB in the English sector. Marguerite Bougeois for the French sector.
