African Diseases EQ: What is the relationship between development and the spread of disease in Africa?

Vocab Pandemic- A disease spread over an entire country, region or the world Endemic- A disease regularly found in a region or area Epidemic- A disease that is wide spread in a community.

1. Cholera Cause: Contaminated Water Symptoms: Diarrhea and Vomiting Cause of Death: Severe dehydration.

Malaria Cause: a parasite transmitted by Mosquitos Symptoms:Fever, Headache and Vomiting Cause of Death: Disruption of blood flow to vital organs Malaria Video WHO

Tuberculosis Cause: Bacteria in the lungs Symptoms: Coughing with blood, fever, night sweats and weakness Cause of Death: Inability to breathe

HIV-Aids Causes: Virus spread through bodily fluids; Symptoms: Weakens immune system, otherwise none Cause of Death: It doesn’t it is another disease that kills you (pneumonia, flu, cancer).

Why do you think that countries in Africa suffer higher death rates and higher infant mortality rates than countries in Europe or North America? Write down 2-3 reasons. 1. In many parts of Africa the lack of infrastructure has made it difficult to provide clean hospitals, electricity or even clean water to large parts of the continent. infrastructure -: the basic equipment and structures that are needed for a country to function properly (transportation, energy and communication)

Uganda is often held up as a model for Africa in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Strong government leadership broad-based partnerships and effective public education campaigns contributed to the decline of AIDS.

Ebola Cause: virus spread from animals to humans Symptoms: fever, vomiting/diarrhea, bleeding Cause of death: hemorrhaging of tissue, dehydration

HDI Many countries in Africa are very UNEVENLY developed within. What does that mean? Let’s look at Nigeria. The Human Development Index (HDI) is used to measure quality of life in countries across the world.

On your own or with a partner, complete the questions and map. On your notes, go back and label each disease as endemic, pandemic or epidemic.
