FASHION POLICE Rules 2014/15 NFHS Wristbands, Headbands, Arm Sleeves, Leg Sleeves, Tights and Other Non-Essential Things for Which We’ve Been Given Rules to Enforce Freddy Krieger, MHSAA Trainer Fruit Belt Officials Association

Rule 3-5 “New Stuff for ‘14/15” ART. 2c Knee and ankle braces which are unaltered from the manufacturer’s original design/production are permitted and do not require any additional padding/covering nor do the braces need to meet the color restrictions. ART. 3 Arm sleeves, knee sleeves, lower leg sleeves and tights are permissible: a.Anything worn on the arm and/or leg is a sleeve, except a knee brace, and shall meet the color restrictions. b.The sleeves/tights shall be black, white, beige or the predominant color of the uniform and the same color sleeves/tights shall be worn by teammates. c.All sleeves/tights shall be the same solid color. d.Meet the logo requirements in 3-6 (one only, limited to 2-1/4 square inches and never larger than 2-1/4 inches in any dimension) ART. 4a Headbands and wristbands shall be white, black, beige or predominant color of the uniform and shall be the same color for each item and all participants. See 3-6 for logo requirements. ART. 7 Compression shorts shall be a single solid color similar to the predominant color of the uniform; the length shall be above the knee. Undergarments shall not extend below the pants/skirt. See 3-6 for logo requirements.

SUMMARY of the Fashion Police Rules... A.FAMILY #1: Headbands and Wristbands are one family, subject to it’s own color restrictions (white, black, beige, or the predominant color of the uniform), and all team members must have the same color of everything in this family B.FAMILY #2: Arm Compression Sleeves, Leg Compression Sleeves, and Tights are another family, subject to it’s own legal color restrictions (white, black, beige, or the predominant color of the uniform), and all team members must have the same color of everything in this family C.FAMILY #3: Undershirts and Compression Pants are yet another family. They must be the predominant color of the uniform, unfrayed, and all team members must have the same color of everything in this family

This was legal last season when a permissible choice was “a Single Solid School Color.” However, because the rule this year reads, “the Predominant Color of the Uniform”, this headband is illegal.

What is the Dallas player wearing that would be illegal in NFHS? QUESTION:

Here are two stylish NFHS high school basketball players you’ll have in your first game this season. Notice how they’re all decked out in the latest Headband, Wristband, Compression Sleeve, fashions! Shucks, they might wanna wear tights and compression shorts, too. Who knows???

You need to know Rule and Rule in order to help Manute and Muggsy smartly AND LEGALLY adorn themselves for the Big Game. That’s right. As a registered basketball official you must also be an officially sworn and deputized member of The ‘14/15 NFHS Fashion Police!

Manute and Muggsy can’t really play a quality high school basketball game unless they’re all smartly decked out in the latest, stylish HEADBANDS WRISTBANDS ARM COMPRESSION SLEEVES LEG COMPRESSION SLEEVES COMPRESSION SHORTS and TIGHTS ! ! !

As Manute and Muggsy consider what color headbands, wristbands, arm compression sleeves, leg compression sleeves, Compression shorts, and tights to wear, what are their legal options?

LEGAL COLOR CHOICES:  W____________  B____________ … or a …  P____________ C____________ of the U____________

LEGAL COLOR CHOICES:  WHITE  BLACK  BEIGE … or the …  Predominant Color of the Uniform (NOTE: Change for ‘14/15 season – CANNOT be “Single Solid School Color” like last year. So, BLUE, in this case, is illegal) SEE EXAMPLE FOLLOWING…

This was legal last season when a permissible choice was “a Single Solid School Color.” However, because the rule this year reads, “the Predominant Color of the Uniform”, this headband is illegal.

Manute selects this color HEADBAND. Looks like he’s gonna have a “lights out” game tonight! And now Muggsy, feeling quite insufficient – and with no particular medical reason (***) – wants to select a legal colored LEG COMPRESSION SLEEVE which will certainly help him reach as high as Manute can. What choice(s) does Muggsy legally have?

(***) Medical – Schmedical. All that “Coach, that armsleeve IS being worn for a medical reason, isn’t it?” hooey is unnecessary now. “Must be worn for medical reasons” has been axed from the “Fashion Police” rules governing arm sleeves, leg sleeves, etc. So, no “medical reason” is required for Muggsey to wear the next item he feels he needs…

Compression sleeves, whether on the arm or the leg, need not be the same color as the headbands or wristbands. However, the same legal color options exist for compression sleeves as for headbands and wristbands. Therefore, Muggsy’s choices are...

Muggsy chooses this color, the predominant color of his team’s uniforms, for a LEG COMPRESSION SLEEVE. How nice.

Now Manute wants to exercise his option to wear, an ARM COMPRESSION SLEEVE like he saw Allen Iverson wear. This will no doubt help his 3-point shooting percentage. What color MUST Manute choose?

Correct. All compression sleeves, whether worn on the arms or the legs, must be the same color for all members of a team. Tights, if worn, or compression pants fit into this same family for color purposes.

Now Muggsy wants to put on a WRISTBAND. It will help protect him when he dunks. What color MUST Muggsy choose?

He smartly chooses the legal color, given Manute’s preference for his headband. Again, headbands and wristbands must be all the same color for all members of the same team wearing them. Bonus question: How high up his arm can Muggsy legally wear his WRISTBAND, and what is the widest it can be?

Wristbands must be worn “below the elbow”… and “a maximum of four inches” wide… with “only one on each wrist”.

Now, Manute wants to add a WRISTBAND and a LEG COMPRESSION SLEEVE and Muggsy wants to add a HEADBAND and an ARM COMPRESSION SLEEVE. What are their only legal color options for each?

That is correct. Not only will they play better in their high school basketball game, don’t they look just dandy?!!! Can you now consider yourself a sworn member of the NFHS FASHION POLICE? NOT QUITE YET. Know what’s new about Rule 3-5, just to be sure!

Nothing. The tights he’s wearing comply with the “black” color requirement and the kneebands he’s wearing don’t appear to be regulated because they seem more like “braces” than “compression sleeves”. ANSWER...

Identify the illegal adornments this guy is wearing. QUESTION:

Headband? OK – cf. 3-6 for logo. Wrist bands? 3-5-4c, not moisture-absorbing, thus ILLEGAL. Numbered Armband? ILLEGAL – doesn’t comply with 3-6. Shirt? Untucked, ILLEGAL Medical Thingies on the upper arms? LEGAL ANSWER:

Assess the legality of the way the white- uniformed player is adorned. QUESTION:

White arm sleeve is LEGAL. Blue thing on his knee seems to be a brace, not a compression sleeve, so it’s not regulated by any color restrictions -- LEGAL. If a compression sleeve, then white would be needed. ANSWER:

Will you allow this player to begin or enter the game? QUESTION:

Nope. Arm compression sleeve must be a single solid color, and for this player must be white, black, beige, or the predominant color of his team’s uniform, which isn’t blue. ANSWER:

Compare the two “Rebels” players. Assess their undershirts, socks, and shoes. QUESTION:

Undershirts: Both by color and sleeve length – LEGAL. Socks: Unregulated – LEGAL. Shoes: Unregulated – LEGAL. ANSWER:

How’d your partner let this guy in the game??? QUESTION:

Your partner didn’t know the rule regarding arm compression sleeves, that they need to be a single legal color. Duh. He owes you a cold one after the game. ANSWER:

Assess the middle “Bulldog” player in the white. QUESTION:

Zap him on that arm compression sleeve…it’s not a single solid color…and it’s not the same as the leg compression sleeve he’s got on his knee (unless that’s a “brace” which would be unregulated – cf NOTE, on definition of a “brace”) ANSWERS:

LEGAL, right? QUESTION:

Right. A-O-K here. Undershirt sleeves are of the same length And a teammate could have a white undershirt with two short sleeves, also. ANSWER:

QUESTION: These guys???

That ref looks good! The security force looks really on top of the situation. The player has a bandage on his wrist, which would be unregulated as to color. Maybe tell him to tuck in his stringy thingy. ANSWERS:

Compression sleeves on the legs are fully legal. But the different sleeve lengths of his undershirt violate He should not have been allowed to begin or enter the game wearing that. Sorry Bulldog #1. ANSWER:

1-- The wristband needs to be below the elbow, and 2– The leg sleeve needs to be white, beige, black, or the predominant color of the uniform (not blue), and 3– The illegal number (3- 4-3d) constitutes an illegal uniform, thus ( ), a direct technical against the coach. BECAUSE:

If those were underwear (“briefs”), they’d be illegal according to 3-5-7, but they’re not. Those are compression shorts. LEGAL since they’re white. ANSWER:

You discover these compression shorts because this player does this to show you... What do you do now? QUESTION:

“Coach, this player is wearing illegal compression shorts. I need a substitute for him right now.” According to 3-3-5, can the coach “buy him back in” with a time out? ANSWER:

ILLEGAL number, but at least his headband and wristbands are LEGAL.
