Solar Power By: Collin Chapman

* Energy derived from the Sun's radiation. Passive solar energy can be exploited through architectural design, as by positioning windows to allow sunlight to enter and help heat a space. Active solar energy involves the conversion of sunlight to electrical energy, especially in solar (photovoltaic) cells.

* Sunlight, made up of particles called photons, radiate from the sun. * These photons enter the solar cell and hit against silicon atoms inside the cell. * This hitting knocks the electrons from the silicon atoms. * The free electrons are then herded into an electrical current as a result of an electrical imbalance in the cell.

* A passive solar system does not involve mechanical devices or the use of conventional energy sources beyond that needed to regulate dampers and other controls. Collects sunlight through southward facing windows. Heat enters and rises upward (Ex: greenhouse, sunroom) * Active solar systems use external sources of energy to power blowers, pumps and other types of equipment to collect, store and convert solar energy. Sunlight hits PV panels and the air or water conductors within them stimulate electricity (ex: solar panels)

* Most abundant energy resource on Earth * Solar energy emits much fewer greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels * Using solar energy produces no air or water pollution * Solar panels can be installed on top of many rooftops eliminating need to find open space * Free energy in long run investment * Initial investment of panels can be very costly * Solar energy is only able to generate electricity during daylight hours * pollution levels can affect a solar cells efficiency * Pollution occurs in production and installation

* Passive solar energy like greenhouses are being used across the country for horticultural purposes and farming * Solar cells are being used in conjunction with active solar energy sources like solar panels nationwide as well * The Solar Energy Industries Association has announce that 1million solar installations in 2015

* There are numerous groups nationwide that are promoting the use of solar energy. * Solar energy’s renewability is being recognized worldwide and has made great strides in its expansion over its short existence * Research centers for the advancement and furthered productivity are emerging worldwide in Europe, China, and many other countries * Solar industries are lowering the prices of their products and resources as the business continues to expand
