Fairfax County’s Cool Neighborhoods Program GETTING STARTED

ROLE: Provide a Channel for Grassroots Action NEIGHBORHOOD GOALS COUNTY INITIATIVE (Reducing Carbon Footprint) COLLECTIVE & INDIVIDUAL ACTIONS BY HOMEOWNERS

BECOMING A COOL NEIGHBORHOOD 1.2% Reduction per year in CO2 emissions by each participating household ( optional green actions e.g. life style changes, not counted in the metric) 2.20% of the neighborhood achieves 2% reduction (Households with very low emissions receive immediate credit toward the 20% goal) 3.Green Actions in Common Areas (parks, etc.)

(A FLEXIBLE DEFINITION) NEIGHBORHOOD (A FLEXIBLE DEFINITION) Home Owner Association School Religious Organization Houses on one, two or more streets (you define your boundaries to the county)

PLAN FOR REDUCING CO2 EMISSIONS Measure household CO2 Emissions –Home energy consumption (electricity, natural gas, fuel oil) –Household water consumption –Household fuel consumption for transportation(gasoline, diesel, etc.) Compare with Fairfax County Average Long Term Goal: Reduce CO2 Emissions to 80% of an average Fairfax County Household at the rate of at least 2% a year
