Child development 1-2MONTHS

Language/Communication  Coos, makes gurgling sounds  Turns head towards sounds  Talk, read and sing to your baby  Play peek-a-boo. Help your baby play peek-a-boo too.  Copy your baby's sounds some How can you help your baby's development?

Social/Emotional  Can briefly calm him/herself (may bring hands to mouth to suck on)  Begins to smile at people  Tries to look at parents  Help your baby learn to sooth herself (it's ok for her to suck on her fingers)  Getting in tune with your baby's likes and dislikes can help you feel more comfortable and confident How can you help your baby's development?

Cognitive (learning thinking problem solving)  Pays attention to faces  Begins to follow things with eyes and recognize people at a distance  Begins to act bored (cries fussy) if activity doesn't change  Act excited and smile when your baby makes sounds.  Pay attention to your baby's different cries so that you learn to know what he wants.  Place a baby safe mirror in your baby's crib so she can look at herself.  Look at pictures of your baby and talk about them. How can you help your baby's development?

Movement/Physical development  Can hold head up and begins to push up when lying on tummy  Make smoother movements with arms and legs  Lay your baby on his tummy when he is awake and put toys near him.  Encourage your baby to lift her head by holding toys at eye level in front of her.  Hold a toy or rattle above your baby's head and encourage him to reach for it. How can you help your baby's development?

Measures to ensure physical safety  Never leave unattended – baby could easily suffocate from random movements  Always support the babies head – he/she has minimal muscle development to support head on his/her own  Dress in layers – regulating baby's temperature will help keep them relaxed and ready to play/learn

Nutritious meal/snack  According to the World Health Organization baby should breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months. There is no other food necessary at this stage and introducing food to early can cause allergic reactions.
