Islamic Art To understand some features of Islamic art To have considered the differences between this and other forms of art

Islamic Art Muslims think it is wrong to represent Allah (shirk) to try to represent Allah’s work. to represent the prophet Muhammad* (idol?) For this reason, Muslims do not believe in making pictures of humans or animals. It is a very serious crime in Islam to try to draw Allah or his messenger Muhammad.  Add these details to your worksheet  What else could Islamic art contain?

Calligraphy Islamic art often contains quotes from the Qur'an or important Muslim words in Arabic They are written in calligraphy and take a long time for the artist to complete ‘Allah’

Arabic words are often written in the shape of something to do with their meaning or just to make things look nice

Think of a word... Think of a word that means a lot to you and write it in your best handwriting.

Geometric Shapes Another form of Islamic art is Geometric Art This is when basic shapes are put together and repeated to make patterns.  Complete the half finished piece of Geometric work on your handout

Islamic Buildings Islamic buildings often contain a mixture of both calligraphy art and geometric art  Complete the outline of the mosque on your worksheet with Islamic style art

Produce a poster for display about some aspect of Islam that we have studied.

Plenary: Islamic Art or not?
