+ Persuasive Writing with Terry Fox. An exercise in writing persuasive letters.
+ Objectives Students will: Create a persuasive letter that will be used to raise funds for the schools annual Terry Fox Run Be able to organize a text within a pre-determined structure Extend written letters to the public domain.
+ Lesson Plan A brief overview Marathon of Hope reintroduction Review homework from last class (Students had to fill out “Hello, Terry Foxers” sheet at home with family) Have students share their answers Watch “I am Terry Fox” video (5 minutes)
+ Lesson Plan continued. Hand out Terry Fox’s persuasive letter to students Recap previous lessons “State Your Position” activity --> explain purpose for activity Inform students of Persuasive Writing activity 10 minutes Hand out persuasive letter Template Give students some topic sentences Ask if there are any questions 5 minutes
+ Lesson Plan continued. Have students fill out their template and begin writing their rough draft have students hand in rough draft paragraph for teacher to mark, this will be handed back next class for students to correct. 20 minutes Explain that the final draft will be put on a pledge sheet with school heading for kids to distribute around their neighborhood to collect pledges 10 minutes
+ Adaptations For students with IEP designated difficulties with written output, students may create a persuasive poster for the annual Terry Fox Foundation contest as opposed to the paragraph.
+ Extensions Students may contribute a blog entry at the Terry Fox Foundation website: /page.cgi/shareyourstories.h tml
+ Assessment At the end of the class students will submit their paragraph drafts for the instructor to mark and hand back next class. Students will then make the corrections and submit their final copies to the instructor to be formatted onto a pledge sheet.
+ Moving Forward Moving Forward: The marked/edited outline will be drafted and the final draft will appear on their personalized pledge sheet “personalization” will also include Terry Fox related clip art”
