What do these images have in common? They are all used to influence you to do something.

What is propaganda? Messages used to persuade you to believe something or to do something. Why? Buy something Think something Do something How? There are --- techniques for using propaganda that we will learn.

1. Bandwagon Persuading people to do something by letting them know others are doing it.

Why does it work? Bandwagon works because it makes you think “everyone else is doing it” and so should you. Why is this an example of Bandwagon?

2. Loaded Words/Emotional Appeal Using words that will make people feel strongly about someone or something.

Loaded/Emotional words work because they make you feel a certain way. What is the LOADED WORD in this ad?

3. Testimonial Using the words and images of a famous person or expert to persuade.

Testimonial works because you feel like you can trust the words of someone widely admired. Who are you supposed to trust In this advertisement? Why would you trust Halle Berry?

4. Transfer Using images to bring up positive feelings in order to persuade.

Transfer works because you transfer the happy feelings you associate with a picture to happy feelings about a person or product. What feelings does this picture represent? What product are we supposed to transfer those feelings to? Even though Coke has nothing to do with Christmas, we are supposed to transfer the happy feelings of Christmas to the product.

5. Repetition Using repeated messages or pictures to persuade.

Repetition works because you remember things you have seen more than once. How many times is the product repeated in this picture?

Rhetorical Question works because it is a way to get attention and acts a substitute for a statement. What question is being asked here? Is the answer obvious?

Expert Opinion works because it appeals to the audiences intelligence. #1 Teething Brand Used by Pediatricians. Who is being targeted in this advertisement? Who are you supposed to trust in this advertisement?

8. Ethical Appeal – Appeal to a reader's sense of right or wrong, or sense of justice.

9. Logical Appeal An appeal to a reader's sense of logic, and what "makes sense.”

10. Plain Folks Showing how a product (or person) easily relates to the common, everyday individual.
