Assess Grant Goals Goal 1: To establish the Texas Biotechnology Mentor Network between high schools and their area community college or regional center to improve curriculum and build interest in the field of Biotechnology as a career choice. Recruit 6 faculty to serve as program mentors 1. Austin Community College (Angela Wheeler/Jennifer Lazare) 2. Collin County Community College (Bridgette Kirkpatrick) 3. St. Philip’s Community College (Solomon Nfor) 4. McLennan County Community College (Stephanie Randell) 5. Lonestar Community College (Daniel Kanier) 6. El Paso Regional Center (Eric Winkelman) Recruit 12 Biotechnology high school teachers to participate & serve as “Master Teachers” Has everyone established 2 high school teachers to participate? Start obtaining signed MOUs
Assess Grant Goals Goal 2: To equip high school teachers with skills, technical assistance and resources to ensure their students consider, and are prepared for careers in STEM and biotechnology. Develop and apply assessment tool to evaluate high school program needs. o Online survey created using Google Form will be ed to participating teachers. o Preview available on Dropbox Purchase 12 equipment/resource starter kits and have them delivered to the 6 community colleges to establish lending libraries. Assess Grant Goals Goal 3: To support high school teachers in their efforts to engage students in biotechnology and STEM career pathways and increase transferability of dual credit classes to community colleges. Develop marketing materials and host “career day” recruiting event at participating high schools. Need to communicate with high school teachers to determine if their school already has a career day Determine the most effective way to recruit biotech students for school year
2014 Summer Summit Held in Austin June Travel funding for all 12 participating high school teachers to be trained in basic lab skills and use of the equipment provided by the grant. Survey pedagogical strategies for implementing biotech curriculum Mentors are welcome to attend all 3 days, but will be required to participate in an online meeting the afternoon of June 27 to review program results.
