Project Title Remedial Support and Dialogue among stakeholders to Increase student's graduation Rate

Remedial Support Remedial Support class is a class which is focused on weak students to help the on uplifting their educational status. It helps to treat the grass root level problem of every individual student and initiate them equally.

Kedar Bhakta Mathema and Min Bahadur Bista Problems of students: Most of the students have problems with subjects like English, Mathematics and Science. Students failure / under performance remains ad inherent feature. Due to different problems girls students, are lacking behind. Lack of remedial teaching and sufficient remediation for struggling students. Inadequate study habits of students and a host of other factors.

Recommendations Introduce a suitable home-work policy. Ensure sufficient remediation for struggling students. Ensure the public schools are adequately monitored and supervised. Improving status of girl’s education.

Introduction of Remedial Support Program This project is an action research starting from We have been working with ASD/OSI. We have been supporting four community schools to conduct remedial support class for grade eight in 2009 In the second year (2010), we supported launch remedial support class in grade four and continued support to grade nine in the same schools. This year as a continuation we are supporting students from grade five and ten.

OBJECTIVES To introduce effective remedial support class in four community schools in grade five and ten with the aim to increase student pass out rate by15%-20%. To enhance the capacity of teachers, school management committee, parents teachers association to internalize the remedial classes in their own capacity. To share the achievements of remedial support class among stakeholders of different levels. To prepare and disseminate copies of recorded methodologies applied in remedial support class of different subjects in four schools. To prepare budget analysis (Internal income, government funding, and expenditure detail) of four community schools and to estimate the cost of running remedial support classes. To conduct a national level dialogue in coordination with ASD for discussion of collected views & opinions from local level regarding importance of remedial support in community school.

Findings The average % of failed students is higher in lower secondary level. So, the lower secondary level is the most vulnerable stage of students in their schooling period. Most of the students are weak in subjects like Mathematics, English and Science. Girls’ are found to be weak in studies in comparison to boys. While studying 1 student performance from Grade 1-10 we have found that the student is having problem in same subject from the very beginning.

Expected Outputs Increments in students pass out rate by 15%. Teachers will be capacitated through Critical thinking in education training. Gap between trainings and its application in the class would be reduced. Student centered learning system will be established effectively. Policy makers and concern stake holders will take initiation to include remedial support class. Budget to start a remedial class will be estimated and resources for that budget is sought.

Impacts Teachers started teaching being based on learning ability of student rather than learning oriented. Remedial support classes has helped to increase the total number of students attending school regularly. It has created a positive attitude towards learning in students. Weak students are uplifting their educational status. Decrement of Drop out rate in class.

Continued………….. The importance of remedial support classes have been realized and to internalize this program as school’s program is emphasized. Some neighboring community schools are also planning to initiated remedial support class on their own effort and resources and some are demanding it. Raised interest of students to study at home after remedial support class.

Challenges There is some difficulties for the students and teachers to manage the time for remedial classes. There is not any provision of snacks/lunch to students during study period. Teachers expectation regarding the program is a bit high for getting incentives. No. of holidays in school are also affecting in students studies. There is a gap between training and its application in class room activities.

Importances of Remedial Support class It is successful in reducing the communication gap between teacher, students & parents. Peer teaching as a part of remedial course enhances interaction among every individual student in class. Revision of subject matter and every small concept in remedial support class through individual approach which are not understood in regular class teaching in a mass. Friend's support and contextual materials in remedial support classes are helpful in learning attitude.

PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR IN MAJOR SUBJECTS

Recommendation Remedial support program must be internalize within public education system. Narrow down the gap between training and its application in class room activities. Training on Critical Thinking in Education must be organized for Teachers. Remedial support class for weaker students should be incorporated in other schools. Capacity of school management committee for managing the remedial support program in all classes must be enhanced.
