SBE International Strategy 2010 to 2015 Summary of key objectives to 2015  Enlarge ALP network by increasing number of partners and extending geographic reach.  Expand range of courses offered on Dubai Campus.  Facilitate supervision of PhD students by Dubai based staff.  Work with Dubai staff to develop the Dubai Hub.  Grow off-campus numbers through IDL study, ALPs and in collaboration with other academic partners.  Improve balance of DDL activity across programmes.  Improve quality and increase numbers of international students recruited to on-campus programmes.  Increase numbers of international research students.

International Research Projects  Around £9 million per annum awarded, almost all for projects at International level.  Numerous international collaborations, those current awards with identifiable funding are: Science Bridges with China - £850K for which we are the Lead Institute. Sciences Bridges with USA (Stanford) – around £1million for which Strathclyde is the Lead UK-India Research Exchanges (UKIERI) – several totalling well over £100K Japanese-funded projects - £30K EU contracts - £7M

Summary of Future Plans Teaching: Continue to develop our courses with our current ALPs offering new courses where appropriate Develop relationships with new ALPs for courses from our existing portfolio of MSc courses and our undergraduate programmes Use Dubai as a hub to expand the delivery of undergraduate material to new ALPs. (Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering undergraduate courses are already available in Dubai) Develop relationships with other Universities for both research and teaching

External Programmes Background  SML External Programmes currently has over 2,000 students studying on the Heriot-Watt Management Programme.  Students can take one of five undergraduate ordinary degrees:  BA Accountancy;  BA Accountancy and Finance;  BA Business and Finance;  BA Management; and,  Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

External Programmes Modules and Materials:  There are a total of 35 modules available, 30 of which are synoptically-linked for assessment, 5 which are stand-alone.  Modules cover the core modules required for each degree pathway and selected optional modules from on-campus which are seen as most relevant to the International market.  Module materials have been specifically designed, authored and produced by School of Management & Languages.  The External Programmes also delivers an English for Business Studies and English for Science Studies courses via the ALP network. These courses are aimed at bridging the gap between an applicant’s level of English and the HWU minimum entry requirements; it does not result in a qualification.

External Programmes Key Facts about the Management Programme  Management Programme launched in  There are two exam sessions (diets) per year (in June and December) where ever module examination can be taken  First Approved Learning Partner (ALP) established in 1999 and now 15 approved institutions in 11 countries.  1,300 Ordinary Degrees awarded  40 Awards of Distinction to date.  Average student pass rate across all module sets is 72%, with continual improvement on annual basis.  Largest Undergraduate Distributed Learning Programme available from Scottish Universities.  Exams are held in approved centres in over 40 countries worldwide, and examined to the same high standards as students attending the University in the UK

Iceland EU-Funded Leonardo project)  The KnowHow2 project (2 years) is led by The Reykjavik School of Visual Arts in Iceland  Project funding is enabling the School to allocate funds for research on specific topics to inform the development of the textiles and drawing curriculum for Iceland and provide input to the School’s review of textiles  The Technical College (Reykjavik), Bergen Academy of the Arts Norway), University of Cumbria, VAI University (Denmark) and Heriot-Watt University are all partners
