I. The Church’s Problems Charges of greed Worldly political power challenged Weariness of dependence on the Church Church has become too powerful, involving itself in all aspects of society Catholic church becomes defensive in the face of criticism

I. The Church’s Problems (cont) The corruption of the Renaissance Papacy The controversy over the sale of Indulgences An Indulgence was the Catholic belief that, at the time, if you donated a large sum of money to the Church, you could guarantee yourself a place in heaven

Technological: Printing Press Invention of movable type was invented in 1450 by Johann Gutenberg Manufacture of paper becomes easier and cheaper Helped spread ideas before Catholics could squash them Intensified intellectual criticism of the Church Protestant ideals appealed to the urban and the literate

(1) England Recent War of the Roses with France created a sense of political instability for the Tudor dynasty --Henry VIII The significance of a male heir to the Tudors. Henry VIII wanted a son so the Tudors could continue to rule England.

A. Germany (Northern) Martin Luther troubled by the sale of indulgences Dominican friar Tetzel was selling indulgences in Wittenberg in 1517 Luther posts his 95 theses on the door of the castle church in Wittenberg on October 31, 1517 This listed Luther’s complaints against the Church

A. Germany (Northern) Pope pays little attention to the Luther at first Luther verbally attacks the Pope and his use of excommunication Luther goes into hiding in 1521 The Protestant Reformation further divided Germany

B. England Henry VIII’s marriage to Catherine of Aragon Henry seeks an annulment (divorce) because Catherine didn’t birth a son. Church would not grant an annulment Henry creates the Church of England

(2) Luther’s Teachings Martin Luther believed that Christianity should only focus on scripture, on the Bible itself. He believed the Catholic Church got away from that idea when they started to get involved in every aspect of the local governments. The greed of the Church, trying to trick people out of their money through indulgences bothered him
