Janice Jackson MEDT 6461 Fall 2013 Floor Plan Narrative/Justification The Greenforest/McCalep Christian Academic Center’s (GMCAC) library was built in 1989 when the school’s population was centered on grades 1-5 and had a student population of 75 students. Today, GMCAC has an enrollment of more than 900 students, and 30 teachers on staff. However, no significant changes have been made to the library to accommodate the growing student population. According to Woolls (2008), “The school library media center should make a positive first impression on all visitors, but especially the primary users – students and teachers” (p.93). GMCAC media center does not make a good first impression. Upon entering the library, visitors encounter industrial sized shelving that do not meet the height, width, or depth requirement for a media center or the requirements of being adjustable. Since GMAC is a K-12 school, the proposed plan will include correcting the sizes of the shelving in addition to placing shelves no higher than five feet for elementary school children, no higher than six feet for junior high and no higher than seven feet for high school students. The current position of the shelving takes up too much space. All shelves will be places flush against the wall when possible to free up space. The library doesn’t really consist of any appropriate furniture. There are four brown fold out lunchroom size tables in the center of the library placed in the shape of the letter “I”. The chairs are wood with padded seats. The most frequent users to the library are the lower schools grades K-5. During their time in the media center, they are forced to sit in the “I” formation that is not conducive to an environment that will encourage and support teaching and learning within it spaces (Woolls, 2008). These tables will be removed and replace with brightly colored round tables with comfortable seats. Beanbags will be placed in the StoryTime area for the younger students. Students in this age group also find it difficult to reach books on the shelves. Their books must be pulled for them, which denies them the learning opportunity to browse books on shelves and choose books or their own liking. As noted above, appropriate shelving will be installed for this age group.

The computers used mainly by grades 6-12 are also placed on long brown tables against a wall. The renovated floor plan will include separate computer stations for each user. This will allow some privacy and personal space for users. Each computer will also be able to access GALILEO. Currently, the school does not have access to this site but a request has been included in the budget. The audio visual DVD’s are currently housed in the LMS office. This makes it difficult for teachers to come in and check out material and they have no way of knowing when new material is placed on the shelves. The DVD’s will be transferred to shelving behind the circulation desk to be more visible to teachers. Since students are not allowed to check out DVD’s, the collection will not be placed within the general collection. The LMS has no work space. The renovated plan calls for adding a workroom beside the LMS office. This means that the LMS office with be half the size it is now. The LMS agrees that this is an ideal solution as it allows her office to be conveniently located to the workroom where she can repair damaged books or create posters or bulletin boards. There is an adjacent room to the library where works of fiction and non-fiction are housed for high school students. This room includes a large conference table that takes up much of the room. This room also houses the copier that is used by teachers. The renovated plan will remove the conference table and replace it with sofas, round tables and comfortable chairs. The room will be called The Nest. Shelves will also be replace and rearranged so that they are flush against the wall. The copier will be moved to the storage room, where A/V equipment and other library equipment are stored. This will reduce interruptions to student’s study or leisure time by teachers coming in to make copies. There will also be one listening center in The Nest. Although any student can used the listening center, it will be marketed toward the Academy’s foreign students to assist them with their English. Nearly 2% of the schools students are foreign.

The library current consists of great natural lighting. Tall windows on the computer walls allows an abundant of light to enter the media center. There are shades attached to the windows that can be lowered when necessary. The library will be painted with warm inviting colors along with brightly colored displays, signage and interesting rugs to make it easy to navigate and more inviting. As Woolls noted, (2008), “The main function of the media center is to provide an environment that will encourage and support teaching and learning within its spaces.” (p.101)
