Veterinary Technician By: Chris Lato

 I have always liked animals and know a lot about them.  They are fun to play with and good to have around because some pets will even eat rodents. Why I Chose This Job

What To Do On The Job  Vet. Tech’s apply anesthetics to animals in surgery.  They assist the vet’s by giving the prescription drugs to the animals assigned by the vet.  They also groom the dog’s when out of surgery or if the owner would like the animal to be groomed.

What Education/Training Required  Associates degree in health.  Almost all need a license.

What High school Classes to Take?  Science and math are the key high school classes to take.  One year of algebra, chemistry, and biology are key to becoming a vet. Tech.

What High school Classes to Take?  Additional math and science courses will add to your transcripts greatly too.  First Aid, Speech, Bookkeeping, and other office procedures are good to have.

Salary and Schedule  More than 40 hours a week.  Make $25,000-$55,000 a year and having a degree will help your salary out.

Hours  Vet. Tech’s will work 40 hours a week and also on holidays and are always on call.  This is a major downfall to this job.

Related Jobs/Promotions  Advancement opportunities are limited without additional training.  Veterinary assistants usually advance by receiving pay increases.

Related Jobs/Promotions  Some people begin there own in-home pet cares.  Related jobs consist of regular veterinarians, small animals researchers, and large animal researchers.

Positive Qualities  Working with animals would be cool.  Caring for the animals is nice.  Especially knowing that your helping an animal live a long and happy life.

Negative Qualities  Working weekends and holidays would suck for this job.  The chance of injury from working on the farm with big animals would blow too.

Negative Qualities  The working conditions of working outside in the snow, sleet, rain, hail, etc…. wouldn’t be good.  Not being able to see your family all the time would suck.
